    CHUCKY THOMAS

    (article from 2013)

Former Braves outfielder embraces coaching role with Burlington club

    Aug 15, 2013 at 12:16 AM

Charles Thomas is coaching outfielders with the Burlington Royals. He’s receiving a dose of coaching, too.

The former big-league outfielder with the Atlanta Braves is in his first stint as a coach at the professional level, describing the experience this summer in the Appalachian League as a chance to benefit from tutelage as well.

“It’s a real joy,” Thomas said. “It’s such an eclectic group (of outfielders). It’s neat being on this side. It’s all about the players and helping them grow and develop and chase their dreams.”

Thomas is listed as a coach with the Burlington team, in a sense an extra instructor than normally is the case for the club, which already has a hitting coach and pitching coach. He said he’s hoping to turn this opportunity into a full-time role with the Kansas City organization. Thomas, 34, used connections from his days with the Braves to forge this opportunity. Kansas City Royals general manager Dayton Moore and assistant general manager J.J. Picollo were formerly in the Atlanta organization.

“Knowing them, it felt like the right place to go,” Thomas said of accepting the position with the Royals in January.

This next phase comes after a major-league career that consisted of 113 games. More recently, he coached a travel team that began as 13-14-year-olds in Asheville for a few years. Thomas spent a couple of weeks last fall observing in Kansas City’s instructional league program. Then he was on board since February with spring training, spending extra time in the spring during extended spring training with many players who make up Burlington’s roster.

Picollo said it’s a chance to see if Thomas fits into a coaching role. He was not retained for 2014.

    ROYALS HIRE EVERY LIVING EX-BRAVE

Not really, but there are as many ex-Braves employees playing for Dayton Moore and the Royals in 2017 than there are in Atlanta.

Tommy Gregg returned for his ninth year as Class AAA Omaha's hitting coach and Phil Falco is the only new coach, joined Omaha as the strength and conditioning coach after serving in the same role at the Major League level with the Atlanta Braves for the last nine seasons.
Leon Roberts, the Braves' minor league hitting coordinator from 2008-2011, enters his first season as the Royals' Class AA hitting coach. e spentg the last five seasons in the Houston Astros' organization, including four (2012-15) as the hitting coach at Triple-A Fresno and one (2016) as the club's roving outfield and base running instructor. Roberts played 11 seasons in the Major Leagues as an outfielder, including his last two seasons (1983-84) in Kansas City. Certified athletic trainer Masa Koyanagi will return for his 10th season with the Royals and sixth in his current role.
Lexington was led by SAL Mabnager of the Year Scott Thorman, who served in the same capacity at Rookie level Burlington from 2015-16. Bench coach Glenn Hubbard enters his fourth season in his position with Lexington.
Damon Hollins is wrapping up his eighth season as hitting coach for the Royals, including the last two at Class-A Lexington.

Senior Coordinator of Player Development Chino Cadahia spent his seventh year in the organization and his 33rd in coaching at the professional level. Cadahia previously served as the bench coach in Kansas City for two seasons (2012-13), after serving in that role with the Atlanta Braves from 2007-10. He was a part of the Atlanta organization from 1996-2010.
Bill Fischer, the Atlanta Braves as the Braves' minor league pitching coordinator and pitching coach of Triple-ARichmond (1992–99; 2004–06). spent his 70th year in professional baseball in 2016 as Senior Pitching Advisor.

Rafael Belliard joined the Royals' coaching staff during Spring Training in 2014 as a Special Assistant to the General Manager and returns for his fourth year in that role. He will also coordinate minor league infield instruction for the third straight season.
J.C. Boscan spent his first season as the Royals' minor league catching coordinator. He played in parts of 19 seasons in the Minors, most recently in 2015 with Triple-A Omaha. Boscan also played in parts of four seasons in the Majors with Atlanta (2010-12) and the Chicago Cubs (2013).
