Is the Futures game tonight? I think Acuna is playing center and hitting 5th if I am remembering correctly..

Acuna went 0-4 but I read good things about his ABs from some of the prospect writers.

    From the futures game: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/241481...-futures-game/

Acuna is the star of the show

All due respect to Rays prospect Brent Honeywell, who struck out four in two innings, and Marlins prospect Brian Anderson, who singled and doubled, it was Atlanta prospect Ronald Acuna who left us as impressed as anyone on the field. That's despite the fact that he went 0-4, because remember, this is a showcase of talent more than it is about winning or losing.

Entering the day hitting .325/.374/.507 since being promoted to Double-A, Acuna cracked the hardest-batted ball of the game, 112.3 mph with a 13-degree launch angle, in the seventh inning off of Royals prospect Foster Griffin. That combination falls for a hit 78 percent of the time, and it was actually the only Barrel of the day -- a ball that qualifies as the near-perfect combination of exit velocity and launch angle. Unfortunately for Acuna, center fielder Corey Ray (Brewers) was positioned perfectly, preventing the hit.

That's not all. Acuna had the three hardest outfield throws of the game, hitting 92.9 mph, 95.2 mph, and 96.7 mph. Forget the 0-for-4; suddenly, it's easy to see why MLBPipeline calls him a five-tool talent, and reminds us that "evaluators get downright giddy when discussing Acuna."

Thanks for posting this. Albies/Acuna could end up being a 8 win pair.

Is anyone familiar with the process that calculates outfield throw velocities? Never read or heard it explained? Calculated from video or radar guns?

thanks CJ and Super... I hate that I missed it. Playing at the pool all day. Great write up. So ready for a few more OF with actual range and arms. We have all this young pitching and put the worst defense possible to support them.

    A position player core of

    Freeman
    Inciarte
    Albies
    Acuna
    Swanson
    Camargo
    Is a pretty good start.

Lock up Flowers for another 3 years and the only hole really is LF and potentially a legit 3B. One of Swanson or Camargo will be an average SS at least.

I hate tying up a ton of money to one player but with Acuna, Albies, Swanson, Inciarte all cheap and cost controlled, I'd strongly consider making a run at Machado or Donaldson.

Acuna is a stud, only saw his first two ABs, but he looked fine.

In his second he fouled off several high 90s fastballs before missing on a good breaking ball, but I thought it was impressive to see him battle, certainly has the bat speed to catch up to good fastballs.

Plus, very average young pitchers can get expensive quickly and we should have enough of them coming thru to not have to sink $20+MM in one.

They'll trade for somebody like Archer in the offseason to who is signed cheap for awhile. With all the cheap young talent coming we can get another superstar to pair with Freddie. We just have to get rid of Kemp somehow.

They are going to have to eat the money and give him away. Nobody is taking that contract (except Coppy, apparently)

I'm kind of surprised an AL wouldn't like Kemp as a DH.

Probably because he ranks 72nd in baseball in offense (tied with Andrelton Simmons)... and is owed $18M a year for next 2 years after this one.

He'd still be a better DH than a lot of guys doing the job currently. He had a terrible June but even a moderate hot streak would boost those numbers.

The $$ is the issue. I wonder how willing they'd be to eat half.
