Much more likely that a 29 year old BP arm with a 97 MPH turbo sinker improves than it is likely an injury prone LHer stays healthy and a nearly 37 year old BP arm doesn't explode.

Giles is just pimping a move made by the Nats, as usual.

The A's gave up 2 fairly risky BP arms that are pitching well NOW for a younger, cheaper, healthier guy that will probably be more valuable in the FUTURE.

In other words, exactly what rebuilding teams should be doing.

I think we can all agree that the biggest pozzy on this board is giles. He's just not a Braves fan.

I was going to say: I wouldn't challenge giles' knowledge of the Zombie Expos system.

They traded their bullpen pieces for a leverage reliever with control and two high draft round prospects. It wasn't just Treinen and they wouldn't have done the deal for just Treinen.

That's fine. The point giles was arguing against was me stating Treinen will possibly end up being the best pitcher in the deal.

Exactly how dense are you? Wow...
So is the cutoff on improving between the ages of 29 and 30? I did not realize that.

Treinen is arby 1 next year so is under control until the end of the 2020 season. Doolittle in that time will make 19.45 million if the club picks up 2020 option so they both have the possibility of being under control for the same amount of time. What will Treinen make over that time? If he's as good as you think he will be, it will be a significant number; maybe not 19 mil, but probably not too terribly far off.

For someone that constantly claims to be smarter than everyone else, it's odd how simple minded you are.

Basically. They are out of it and wanted to save money and took a shot with Treinen and 2 B- prospects. The Nats had to rid themselves of someone on the 40 man and if Treinen doesn't work out this year, the As can let him walk and hope the prospects work out.

It's a now-for-later trade for the Nats, but I don't think the A's got that much out of the deal. As giles says, Treinan is hitting arb, so the A's--as is their usual MO--will dump him. Whatever magic beans Beane once had have turned bad.

The A's will never be more than a middling WC team with their current strategy. Beane has said he absolutely will not completely tear down and rebuild, and they're going to pay for it. It's funny to me that he claims they can't afford to do that with their current location and situation, but to me it seems that the only way you're going to really gain traction is to build a great team. Can't do that with their current approach.

It was just a strange trade all around. People were talking about Robles for Iglesias or Robertson. I do believe that would have been too much for the Nats, but Beane goes and trades not 1, but 2 pretty solid pen arms with additional control for non top 5 prospects and a middling reliever with decent stuff that the Nats would have probably dropped at the end of this year unless he turned it around over the next month. (due to arbitration)
