If Hamels brought 3 legit prospects, Wood should at least bring one. I'd take any of the 3 guys the Phillies got over Olivera.

This will be a good trade if Olivera pans out and, And it's a big if, the Braves spend the money they will have on Price or Greinke and another bat.then your talking about a playoff caliber club. But if they dont spend or miss on an impact arm and bat then it sucks lol

Dave Cameron brought up the possibility of the Dodgers using Wood to get Price+.

Alex Wood is likely the kind of 2016 asset that the Tigers would love to land in a Price trade, though the Tigers would have to give up more than just Price to get Wood, in all likelihood; it’s not too hard to squint and see a deal for both Price and Yoenis Cespedes that also has the Tigers taking on some of the remaining Andre Ethier or Carl Crawford money as an incentive for the Dodgers to ship Wood north.

How would we not be able to get a cost controlled 24 year old hitting prospect?

I hope this trade works out well for the Braves but it seems very weird to be trading several young pieces for an unproven 30 year old with a bad elbow and a long-term contract when you're in the midst of a rebuild. I just hope in a few years the Braves won't be giving up more pieces to move his contract. Hopefully it turns out well, we'll see.

As much as we question all of this, the Braves much of been absolutely obsessed with this dude. I mean, obsessed.

They gave up a lot for him.

So here's a question. If Wood would get you Price and Cespedes, would Olivera get you Price, Cespedes, and Peraza? Lulz.

So let's compare the individual players with their closest match.

Olivera vs Wood: Wood is about a 2 - 3 WAR pitcher. Fangraphs values Wood at about 16 mil, but I'll give him a slight bump and say he's worth 18 mil. I'm going to compare Olivera to Matt Duffy, which I think is a fair comparison. Duffy is a 3ish WAR player this year. Fangraphs has his value at about 25 million. So if Olivera can produce then there's no question that he's a more valuable player than Wood. But of course that's a huge if. Wood is more likely to produce his predicted WAR over the next few years. Price wise, I think it's pretty close assuming Wood would have stuck with the Braves until free agency. Plus the Arroyo money.

Peraza vs Bird and the draft pick - Clearly Peraza is a more valuable prospect given that he's a position player and higher rated. But Bird isn't a throw in. He's got a talented arm. This one is hard for me to judge, but I think it's fairly close to being an even swap.

Johnson and Avilan vs Paco - I mean I would rather have Paco going forward. I would consider this an even trade.

So when you break it down like that it's not quite as bad as it first appears if Olivera actually produces. The Braves are basically thinking to themselves that it is worth the risk. I don't know that it is.
    thank you weso1!

Braves need to dump Markakis if at all possible.

Braves should try to turn Teheran into a legit 3B bat or OF bat.

    Move Olivera to 2b

    Sign Price or Grienke

    Sign Heyward

Then we might could get relevant again

Check out what Olivera did in admittedly a small sample in the minors this year, then go see what Nick Williams did. For a young, rebuilding team, I'm taking Williams over Olivera.

They also had a huge hard on for Melky Cabrera

Well, the guy that left Atlanta (even outside the steroid crap) is pretty damn solid. He's been good this year too.

I think Wood EASILY gets David Price.

I would bet he could easily get us a top 20 prospect. Maybe not Seager... but someone who could be an impact player. I really wish we would try to pull something with Cubs for one of their many bats.

But between Markakis and Olivera, we have a lot of ... experience
