Actually, the guy who could hit second without it being much of a stretch at all is Markakis.

From DOB's latest, thoughts on remaining moves. Tyler Marlette seeming more and more likely as the PTBNL.

They continue to consider a possible deal for free agent Welington Castillo or another catcher, but that’s not a need in Coppolella’s view, since they already have Tyler Flowers and backups Anthonty Recker and (at Triple-A) Tuffy Gosewisch. They would also like to add a catching prospect that might be ready in a year or two, and the Braves have inquired about relievers including Orioles All-Star Brad Brach. Again, prices as of Wednesday were too high, the Orioles reportedly asking for a package that included Braves rookie outfielder Mallex Smith.

I like Marlette and hope it's him. But what would've kept him from being thrown in the deal at the time it happened to avoid the risk of someone else taking him in the Rule 5 tomorrow?

I can't seem to figure out what kind of "wit" could have the first 4 letters starred out.

    Give me another hint?

Yeah, it would indicate that the Braves want him, but don't want to add him to the 40-man roster. So they make him the PTBNL just in case he gets picked, in which case, the Braves and Mariners have another player they include in the deal as a substitue.

Can you trade for a guy like Marlette that wasn't protected by the deadline and add him to your 40 man for protection? Either way, if Marlette is the guy, it's obviously about the roster spot in some capacity.

Obviously no one really knows which prospects will hit, which is why I understand the usefulness of the averages. But it still means the values on the MLB player will be far more correct than the prospect values.

I like using those values, but I'll still make individual evaluations based on individual circumstances and players.

I also like players whose surplus value comes primarily from their talent over players whose surplus value comes from their contract, again, especially for a team like the Nats who are less hampered by a big contract.

And it also comes down to what else the White Sox could have gotten, and I don't think any other offers would have been competitive with what the Nats gave up.
That's all well and good but it's been shown this is how MLB front offices make trades in todays game. Contract surplus value is a real thing as is value of top 100 prospects. These things matter and usually line up among teams that aren't run by morons (see Dave Stewart). All the estimations we have may not be accurate (due to FO's having their own evaluation systems) but they are pretty close. Which is also why I don't see how people constantly **** on the public WAR stats because FO's must have their own which is 100% more accurate. What we have correlates pretty well to the trades and FA signings that happen each year.

One thing that would seem to point to Marlette is Kiley's evaluation of him a couple years ago. It seems like we end up with those players he was high on. It makes me wonder if Kiley is influencing our player evaluations, or if Kiley's contacts were primarily Braves scouts.

I'm guessing they are relying on Kiley's knowledge of players outside the Braves organization. Why would they hire a guy if all he did in his previous gig was regurgitate into their own scouts provided him?

so, we really are just going to hold on to Markakis through that whole pointless contract we gave him?
