Not sure how effective taxing weapons and ammunition manufacturers would be in stopping shootings. It would generate revenue but only from legitimate transactions.

I have no problem with confiscating a weapon used in committing a crime. Unless I'm mistaken this is already done through civil asset forfeiture with the gun being an instrumentality of the crime. I would imagine at least some of these guns are sold back to the public (usually law abiding gun owners are shopping such sales). So destruction over resell is probably not a big issue.

Civil liability for manufacturers isn't as clear cut as with tobacco companies. What got tobacco companies in trouble was their disinformation campaign to cover up the dangers their product presented to those consuming it. Guns have the independent act of a criminal intervening in the liability. Also, guns are usually sold through local distributors. So even some kind of negligent entrustment theory is hard. Civil liability is difficult here. Also, considering the number of guns already in circulation, targeting manufacturers of new guns isn't likely to have a huge impact.

Where I absolutely agree with you is education and poverty reduction. I consider those linked. This is the most effective way to stop all crime. Affluent people are less likely to shoot others than poor people. Just the stats. Target poverty, increase education, and watch crime rates fall.

1) take the profit out of weapons and ammunition. Passing the cost on to consumers --- well, my first pack of cigarettes cost 25 cents. That same pack today is $5.00 ish. Needless to say the cost of smoking is a deterrent

My thoughts are to make those that profit off of the manufacture and commercial sale liable. The fact people are making profits ...

We are not going to out law shooting . That aint gonna happen --- but we can make it more difficult to gain access.
Of course bad actors will still find a way --- but again, curtailing weapons/ ammunition commerce would be key

there are significant negative externalities involved in sales of firearms...by that economists mean there is a third party not involved in the transaction who often bears a cost...that provides a justification on efficiency grounds to tax such transactions...i would dedicate the proceeds of such a tax to a fund to provide compensation to victims of gun violence and their families

Police hold a family at gunpoint. Their crime? Police incompetence. I understand people who say well this was a mistake. The problem I have with that is police have no sympathy if you make a mistake. Accidentally point a gun at a cop who is breaking into your house? I just want equal application of the law. If we want the law to be tough and unforgiving like it is now then it needs to be that way for everyone. This strict enforcement on you and me and then loose enforcement on them is bullcrap.

If I learned anything from Fox News from 2009-2017 it is that this is directly the Presidents fault. Specifically for not respecting police enough. Wanna bet if this is all of a sudden the Presidents fault according to Fox starting January 21st 2021?

Here is an example of the problem I have with law enforcement. Say what you will about how the cops handled the case after getting a call. Thats not the issue I have with this. The issue that I have is that when its determined that this was a false report it ended there. There is no investigation into the false report. These two men were victimized, not by the cops but by the caller. At this point they have reasonable suspicion that the caller was misusing 911. There is no concern here from the officers that law abiding citizens were victimized here. These are the people they are supposed to be protecting and serving. If you want to say you dont agree with arresting or charging the caller thats fine, but its at the least worth investigating, right? You know why they dont do that? Because they want people to call 911 on everything. They dont care if its a hoax. All they need is for someone to make a claim and they have full authority to detain and search that person. The cops arent the bad guy in this situation but they are aiding and abetting the bad guy who commited a crime against law abiding citizens. WTF do they think protecting and serving is? The caller did not say "maybe" he didnt say "I think" he stated that he personally saw them break into the house. After determining that no break in occurred it is their obligation to investigate that.



Take a wild guess what employment the hoax caller was/is retired from? Law Enforcement......

Former State House majority leader in Illinois arrested in Chicago for a warrant of a 33 year old man with tatoos all over his body. Art Turner is a 60+ year old man with no tatoos. And to top it off the cops got lost on their way to the jail and had to ask him for directions. Good thing we have cops or people like Art Turner might be kidnapped at gunpoint and human trafficked..... oh wait....

Heres one from the UK. Person calls police on a 12 year old black kid who they saw with a toy gun through the window of their home...... police raid the home point guns at the family and endanger their lives, handcuff the kid and ransack the house. If you dont want to blame the police here thats fine, but we need to recognize the harm these false accusations have on people. Having guns pointed at you and your life threatened isnt less harmful to a person because the person has a badge. Being strip searched isnt less of sexual assault because a person has a shiny badge(no strip search in this case just talking in general). Police need to understand that in cases like this that the people victimized deserve to be protected and served too. When the cops get bogus reports like this they need to care about holding whoever is responsible accountable. You can say well the person was mistaken. Thats fine. They should atleast get a warning and told that law abiding citizens were harmed because of their false accusation. Maybe its not fair to charge a person who mistakenly makes a call like this but often times people do this repeatedly. There should atleast be some record of the incident so if a person makes a habit of making false claims they can either be criminally and/or civilly held accountable or at the least it can let police know that their future accusations are not credible enough to act upon.

Here is a relatively tame video. This isnt "just doing their job" this is "I dont care what the law says I am going to do what I want". We have to break the mentality that cops can do whatever they want and claim to be mistaken. The cops only care about this because they are getting sued. Real law enforcement would be very upset that a citizens rights were violated and that they were assaulted.
