MFII pegged this one upthread. He was simultaneously deserving of the axe AND a scapegoat.

I thought there was zero chance of his managing the club in 2017. Still, this is . . . odd. I can't help wondering—just musing, mind you—if this is some more CYA damage control by the front office.

Plus his argument is bad because he's just picking out a small sample, you can do that with anyone. It's really a non-argument rightly considered, that is why when I see such arguments I usually ignore them.

Yikes, the part about how he found out is a combination of depressing and embarrassing.

Finding out you’ve been fired is never easy, but imagine finding out the way that Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez did late Monday.

An hour or so after the Braves’ 8-5 series-opening loss to the Pirates, a person familiar with the situation said Gonzalez received an email notifying him of his scheduled flight to Atlanta on Tuesday afternoon.

That was a bad sign, since the four-game series in Pittsburgh runs through Thursday.

Gonzalez and general manager John Coppolella have been addressing rumors about Gonzalez’s job status for weeks, since the Braves were losing their first nine games of the season on the way to a 9-28 record through Monday. So when he got the email, it had to be a bad sign for Gonzalez.

The Braves had already made the decision to fire him and booked his commercial flight home Tuesday, but didn’t plan to tell him he’d been fired until Tuesday morning, after president of baseball operations John Hart flew to Pittsburgh to join general manager John Coppolella.

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez was fired late Monday, finding out after receiving an airline automatic email notifying him of a flight ... Read More
Later Monday night after getting the email, Gonzalez eventually had confirmed by Braves top officials what he already was certain about by then: He was fired.

To be blunt, why bother? I mean when you started the season with this clown, it was basically to give him a shot to prove he's not a clown, inspite of his results basically every year as the manager of the Braves. He should have been fired when Wren tried to fire him after his second epic collapse in command. Instead they nuked the team, and instead of getting a new manager with a new team to try and build them up (think Joe Maddon with the Rays) the BRaves stuck with Fredi who probably had a slightly better than expected season overall. This year we're sucking hard. But we're not gonna find the manager of the future now. We're gonna plug someone else in to try and see if we can get some magic.

I guess the advantage is now they can openly court a new manager.

I mean, everyone wanted him gone, we have 9 wins, and now he's gone. I don't really understand why people are now wondering why we did it now. Who cares, he's gone.

AJ is a -0.5 WAR player in 23 games. All that needs to be said is that he's horrible at this stage of his career.

I mean I don't really care. But again, why bother? He sucks as a manager, but the damage has been done already and it will take almost a month for SNitker to break habits already here.

I'm kinda with KB here ... I don't want to see decisions made off a spreadsheet, either. That said, I sure as heck want my manager to know what's on them.

He failed the team with those September losses and then the organization failed him. I am indifferent on this. Don't think anyone with any credibility will went to manage here.

I believe they assured him they would bring him back as soon as he was eligible. But then Chase D'Arnaud got hot. Life is cruel at times.

    My two cents worth:

I never celebrate when my favorite teams fire a coach/manager. I didn't enjoy it when the Cowboys fired Wade Phillips. I didn't enjoy it when Alabama fired Mike Shula or former basketball coach Anthony Grant. I didn't enjoy today's news either. But, most of knew it was coming and probably had to be done. True, some things were not his fault. As I have said before, not many managers would have won with this club as constructed now. However, some of the decisions made had to make some wonder just how equipped he was to be a big league manager. With the team set to move to SunTrust Park next season, you want to have the right leader.

I wish Fredi Gonzalez nothing but the best in the future. Here's hoping the right man is in the dugout come 2017.
