Imo, the likeliest scenario is that the Yanks are pushing up against the luxury tax. They were at 188 million a week ago I believe, before acquiring Britton and Happ. Not sure how much money, if any changed hands in those trades, but in all likelihood, they are probably within a couple million of the luxury tax. If that's correct, they likely can't afford Archer without going over the luxury tax or without Tampa eating his contract this year (which they don't like doing). May be the Rays are demanding Sheffield in return if they have to eat payroll in a Archer deal. Also, may be the Rays have a particular player they love from scouting us (Allard may be?), but we aren't interested in the total cost of acquiring Archer. So a 3 way could look like this:
Braves get Gray
Yankees get Archer
Rays get Allard, Frazier, and a couple of 2nd tier prospects.
