A solar observatory in New Mexico was mysteriously evacuated last week and remains shut down until further notice, even as a geomagnetic storm bears down on Earth’s atmosphere.

According to local media, the National Solar Observatory in Sunspot, NM has been closed since last Thursday, along with the nearby post office, and employees affected have no idea why.

The FBI has since showed up to the site and Blackhawk helicopters have been seen circling overhead, but officials remain tight-lipped as to what’s going on, saying only that they are ‘addressing a security issue.’
    ...
Otero County Sheriff Benny House revealed that even local law enforcement has been kept in the dark, despite being told to stand by.

‘The FBI is refusing to tell us what’s going on,’ House told Alamogordo Daily News.

‘We’ve got people up there that requested us to standby while they evacuate it. Nobody would really elaborate on any of the circumstances as to why.

‘The FBI were up there. What their purpose was nobody will say. But for the FBI to get involved that quick and be so secretive about it, there was a lot of stuff going on up there.

‘There was a Blackhawk helicopter, a bunch of people around antennas and work crews on towers but nobody would tell us anything.’

As of September 11, officials confirmed the facilities were still closed, and would not be reopened until they were given the green light.

‘We were told on September 6th that we would be evacuated along with the surrounding area, we were not told why,’ USPS spokesperson Rod Sturgeon told ABC 7 KVIA.

‘We were just told to be out of the area. We remain suspended until we are allowed to return.’

I’ve been following this. Supposedly the night janitor was downloading child porn on the computer.

I saw that. Not sure why that would require evacuating the town along with the observatory though.

I agree. Im not a conspiracy nut in any way but kiddie porn isn’t the real cause here.

I’m going with the guy who posted this:

I think it's far more likely the facility was being used to spy on the White Sands Missile Range. That would explain why the FBI had Crews working on the radio towers and observation equipment and also why the local police would be kept in the dark and the use of military assets.

This Yemeni adventure started by the Saudi crown prince is not going to end well.

Btw the Saudis need us a lot more than we need them. An occasional blunt reminder never hurts.

Our continued involvement in this horror against the advice of the people who should know best is a seriously underexamined failure of the current consensus. It’s not just Trump, it’s all the venal DC dip****s who’ve been snowed by a combination of Gulf money and MBS’s laughable reformist charm offensive. **** that dude.

I dont know if anyone is following the 3-D printing gun saga but it has taken a very interesting turn. Cody Wilson has been in a legal battle with 22 states about releasing code to make guns with 3-D printers. A warrant was issued for his arrest while he was in Taiwan. Police alledge that he met a 16 year old girl on sugardaddymeet.com and they met in a hotel and he paid her 500 for sex..... they say the girls counselor called police a week later to report it. Police interviewed the girl and she told them all about it. Police are claiming they have security footage of Wilson with the girl at the time going to his car and getting in an elevator at the hotel.

Cody Wilson skipped his flight back from Taiwan but was arrested there later. This seems REALLY convenient for the government and many suspect foul play. My guess would be they were illegally spying on Wilson and then just tipped off local PD. There have been cases revealed relatively recently where cops and prosecutors would noy reveal how they knew the criminal activity was going on and would use seemingly random traffic stops to mask the source because it would cause the case to be thrown out.

The dude has gone from posting plans for guns that are literally going to blow up in people's faces to allegedly paying a high school sophomore for sex. I don't think he's enough of a criminal mastermind that the feds had to bend any rules to catch him.

Nested on the servers’ motherboards, the testers found a tiny microchip, not much bigger than a grain of rice, that wasn’t part of the boards’ original design. Amazon reported the discovery to U.S. authorities, sending a shudder through the intelligence community. Elemental’s servers could be found in Department of Defense data centers, the CIA’s drone operations, and the onboard networks of Navy warships. And Elemental was just one of hundreds of Supermicro customers.
    ...
But that’s just what U.S. investigators found: The chips had been inserted during the manufacturing process, two officials say, by operatives from a unit of the People’s Liberation Army. In Supermicro, China’s spies appear to have found a perfect conduit for what U.S. officials now describe as the most significant supply chain attack known to have been carried out against American companies.

One official says investigators found that it eventually affected almost 30 companies, including a major bank, government contractors, and the world’s most valuable company, Apple Inc. Apple was an important Supermicro customer and had planned to order more than 30,000 of its servers in two years for a new global network of data centers. Three senior insiders at Apple say that in the summer of 2015, it, too, found malicious chips on Supermicro motherboards. Apple severed ties with Supermicro the following year, for what it described as unrelated reasons.
    ...
One government official says China’s goal was long-term access to high-value corporate secrets and sensitive government networks. No consumer data is known to have been stolen.

The ramifications of the attack continue to play out. The Trump administration has made computer and networking hardware, including motherboards, a focus of its latest round of trade sanctions against China, and White House officials have made it clear they think companies will begin shifting their supply chains to other countries as a result. Such a shift might assuage officials who have been warning for years about the security of the supply chain—even though they’ve never disclosed a major reason for their concerns.

The link is worth clicking on just to see the excellent graphics depicting how difficult this chip was to spot.
Also, at some point we need to do something destructive to inform China that all of their intellectual property theft is not cool.

Let me ask you this. If we are doing it to them are they wrong to do it back to us? Maybe we arent doing the exact same thing but you know we are spying on them as much as possible. Kind of stupid to ask them to stop while having no intention of stopping on our end.

I agree with you, as far as government vs. government spying. The Chinese government is putting a large amount of effort into hacking and stealing from private companies, and I don't think we should expect, or want, private companies to engage foreign governments in cyber warfare. At some point these companies will feel compelled to quit playing only defense and that is exactly what will happen.

Legislation hasn't kept up with evolving technology. We have laws in place to prevent us from buying military hardware components from most foreign companies. Some of those had to be waived to allow the international collaboration we have on the F-35, but that is a difficult process. We just haven't had a legislature willing to risk the ire of our "trading partners" by making the same requirements for IT hardware. I think the web has been militarized enough at this point that not even consumer IT hardware components should be allowed from hostile nations. Multiple Chinese cell phone companies have already been found guilty of spying on their consumers. I just can't believe this isn't taken more seriously.

Interestingly, there is a recent novel named "Ghost Fleet" about a near-future war with China that was based on this exact scenario. Subcontractors working on US fighters and missiles cut costs by illegally sourcing electronic components from China. Then war breaks out and China can detect our stealth planes and our missiles won't lock onto theirs. It wasn't a well written book, but it was an interesting premise.

Bizarre situation in Turkey, where Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi apparently visited the Saudi consulate to obtain a marriage license and ... well, disappeared. NYT reports Turkish sources saying that he was murdered in the consulate.

Speculation is now that he was snatched and the murder allegations were meant to put pressure on SA to produce him. Weird stuff.

Meanwhile, the head of Interpol is, uh, missing.
