If DeGrom is truly available, what would it take?

ESPN as recently as Friday kept alive the notion that the time is now for the Mets to capitalize on DeGrom's value by dealing him into this hungry market.

The article said the Braves are a "perfect match" except for the fact that they are in the same division. But the Mets just made a key deal with the Phillies, so that's still not a factor in Mets-Braves dealings.

DeGrom is inarguably an ace, a No. 1. He's under control until 2020 and is open to a market-value extension. So that's all good. Any deal is gonna hurt, to be sure.

    What would get DeGrom, realistically?

Let's take Acuna off the table. Likewise Albies. Any other young player can be discussed.

I have now started over for the fifth time trying to put together a package the Braves can live with. Do I consider Pache and Contreras untouchable? Must I include a big leaguer like Camargo and hope Riley arrives riding a chariot of gold, or do I include Riley? Then I consider how badly the Mets will want pitching.

My package is Camargo, Encarnacion, Anderson (NY native), Sims and Bryse Wilson. Get the Mets to put Kelly Johnson in ... oh, wait. But seriously (at least as serious as these things get) it might escalate to Wright instead, but we'd have to get something else from the Mets. Conforto?

My argument is that with Soroka, Toussaint and Wright, it is a tolerable loss. I am gambling that Fried, Wentz and Weigel are going to be fine. Likewise Tristan Beck.

Oh, and then I send Muller and Didder to the Rangers for Beltre.

Would like to kick this around as long as it doesn't get personal. I'm just mucking around here; if it gets insulting, I'll just close the thread and say to hell with it.

    Probably more like Wright/Soroka, Anderson/Allard, Pache, Riley/Camargo

Since we don't have an elite prospect currently, the best we could hope for is to build a large package of really good, but not great, prospects. Even then, I'm not sure the Mets would take quantity over quality.

You're looking at 2 top 50 prospects, with one being a hitter. Say goodbye to Pache or Riley and Soroka, Anderson or Wright. Next, you can expect 2 more in the top 50-100 range. Say goodbye to 2 of Gohara, Touki, Allard, and Fried (if Fried he's still valued in that range). Then it likely takes 1 or 2 more guys from our 2nd tier set of Muller, Cumberland, Contreras, Ynoa, etc.

    So package probably looks like:

    Soroka, Riley, Allard, Touki, Cumberland.

Sorrry, but not doing that. DeGrom is great, but putting that many resources into a pitcher is dumb. Have we learned nothing from Dave Stewart's incompetence?

If DeGrom could he had for Rico's package it would he a no brainer. Unfortunately I don't think that would be close to enough, and the package it would take would be too big of a hit to the organizational depth of a mid market team. I don't think it's a good idea.

Carp's package is probably close, and it's way too much to give up right now.

honestly I would rather go after Noah Syndergaard. The 2 of them have similar numbers, but Noah Syndergaard is only 25 and under control till 2022, DeGrom is 30 and only 2 years of control.

if we want to upgrade our rotation this offseason i would suggest an alternative route...zach greinke... with his contract there is less surplus value...would cost much less in terms of prospects...in effect we would be using the funds freed up by the Matt Kemp trade to upgrade the rotation

We’ve already detailed deGroms value and what type of package it would require from the Braves

I love the Greinke idea. And Shanks would be thrilled.

Not sure why you think Greinke would be available, you made this same post abut him last offseason. Zero chance to think the Dbacks are going to sell, with Goldy going into his last year of his contract and them having a strong team they will be buyers if anything going into next season just as they are at this deadline.

there were some indications last off season they were open to moving him...or two off-seasons ago

This was in the context of an ESPN story that ran two days ago. And we are trying to avoid the insulting tone that seems to spring up around your threads and posts. In this case, it would have been appreciated that you would have taken the time to repeat your earlier conclusion. More time efficient that trying to find an old thread on this archaic site.

I love him, but that’s putting ALOT of eggs in one basket.

You give up that much and he has TJ....you are toast. We have a lot of talent coming up and although there is not a no doubter ACE, we have many #2-#3 types with ACE upside.

Look at how many pitchers we have had to use this year. Maybe we could sneak in and nab a Stroman at a reasonable price. We just don’t have the budget like the Yankees to go all in and it not work.

Stretch these young guys out like Fried and see what they have. We’ve spent all this time devolving them...might as well see it through.

Difference is DeGrom is a top 5 pitcher in baseball and What’s his name profiled as what..,a #3 or 4?

That said all we got was their bust #1 draft pick, their 4th of, and a back rotation arm.
