    Pirates announcer Steve Blass

    Public enemy number 1.

MLB should step in and pressure the Pirates to fire his geriatric ass.

I hope Acuna comes out tonight with something like the Miami turnover chain.

He’s their version of Joe Simpson. Nothing to see here.

    I disagree.

It is an MLB-wide issue and we need to stamp out the people who are the most egregious with their racism.

Sadly, often they don't even know they are being racist.

Acuna is a Latin American ball player, but the anti-black racism applies here, too. Always has in baseball.

There are exactly 0 African-American players on the ATLANTA Braves. 0. That is an absolute travesty, especially when you consider the optics the Braves created by leaving Atlanta for a crappy suburb.

Baseball attendance is down across the board. I love baseball, but I'll be the first to admit football eats its lunch. You get guys like Deion and Bo Jackson playing baseball again, more people will come out to the ballpark.

I believe football is structurally a better game for the TV era, but baseball should OWN the spring and summer.

Make Baseball Great Again by embracing black America.

And the guys beaning Tim Anderson should be suspended 50 games, IMO. Enough's enough with the old white man silliness.

Who are the African-American players you feel the Braves should have acquired this past offseason?

The fact there weren't any just lends credence to my argument.

    It's an MLB-wide problem.

    Is Touki not African-American?

It will fluctuate up and down by year. I wouldn't worry about it. For a while we had Heyward and the Upton brothers.

It's a cultural thing. MLB is the 3rd most popular sport in America. It's also the one that takes the longest to get paid in as well for any upcoming athlete. MLB is not racist.

You are correct- Touki is. I thought he was born in Haiti but Florida is his birthplace.

So we have 1 guy in the bullpen.

That's the point. MLB is generally against African-American culture.

Remember Lastings Milledge giving all the fans high fives? He got ripped to shreds over that, when that's exactly what we need more of.

The World Baseball Classic was also outstanding entertainment when teams like Puerto Rico and the Dominican played. They would just be beaned if they did some of that stuff in the majors. And that SUCKS.

Baseball doesn't have to be the third sport in America- it chooses to be.

He said that old school baseball players might be bothered by acuña’s gold chains and jewelry and throw at him.

Inner city baseball programs have really died. MLB and other groups have made efforts over the past few decades to bring back some of those programs, but you need space (as in inner city baseball parks) and staff to make these things work over the long term and both (especially well-maintained urban baseball parks) are lacking.

The other thing with baseball is it's a very finite skill specific sport and successfully hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to master. In the suburbs, you have kids playing organized ball at a very young age. It doesn't happen to the same extent in the inner cities. That puts a lot of very talented young African-American athletes at a distinct disadvantage when it comes time to seriously compete. Baseball isn't just a game where a good athlete can trot out onto the field and succeed. It takes a lot more practice to hone very specialized skills than it does in football, basketball, or hockey. Further, baseball is far more heavily predicated on avoidance of failure than achievement of success. You are going to fail--a lot--in baseball. I don't blame kids who are on the wrong end of the economic stick not being drawn to a sport where failure is prevalent.

The other thing is individual cost. All you need for basketball is a pair of sneakers (somewhat pricey), a ball, and a park. Football is expensive, but more highly subsidized by booster groups. In baseball, you need spikes, a glove, and sometimes a bat.

Could be right. But maybe not really. Been a long ass time since all baseball players didn’t have personality.

You're really taking the position that MLB has actively decided they don't want African-American athletes? I would be interested in seeing a defense of that position, beyond a few people not liking something that Lastings Milledge did.
