MLB Pipeline Top 10 OF: No Acuna

Was hoping he would slid in there at #10 or so but no bueno.

    http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2017?list=of

Pretty sure Benintendi is going to be the #1 overall guy.

Not much of a surprise. Lewis is 10th, and they had him #28 overall last year. I would expect Acuna somewhere around 50.

So question, would you guys rather have Acuna or Lewis. Both were injured last year but both flashed pretty good numbers. Obviously Lewis will be ready sooner but I think Acuna could be better

Lewis will be a better hitter imo. Acuna will get a good WAR bump from being able to play center well.

Too early to tell. This is a really big year for both of them.

Aren't there questions about Lewis' ability to hit a fastball. I thought he had a somewhat long swing with a big leg kick.

Acuna. After watching him this year, I'm sold.

Acuna because he didn't destroy his knee. Before the knee injury, Lewis easily.

I bet Lewis still puts up more WAR than Ian Anderson ever does.

I like Anderson, just not with the 3rd pick. I know we did that so we could get another stud pick in the comp round but I would have chosen the stud at 3 bc a lot of teams don't get to pick there often.

Lewis is pretty boom or bust for me. HS pitchers are as well. I'm trusting the experts on that.

Acuna should have to earn his way on the list. If he's half of what talking chop says then he'll be in the top 5 next year.

You may not believe it, but all sources in and around our FO claimed we truly liked Anderson at 3, regardless of what else it helped us get. Just because we got a guy for under slot, and just because he was rated a little lower by other sources, doesn't mean we passed over guys we thought were better.

Acuna every day of the week and twice on Sundays. I think the Braves passed on Lewis for a reason and they have access to a lot more resources than we do.

To no surprise, Acuna wins hands down.

    What about Moniak and Acuna..

Still easy for me. Shot, I would rather have Lewis over Moniak..

That's fine. It's all a crap shoot anyways. There will be guys drafted later that out perform top picks every year.

It is a crap shoot....except when it isn't. There has been a few times where everyone knew a particular player was going to be a star, like Griffey Jr & AROD, and they were right. Then they knew Van Poppel & Brien Taylor was sure thing stars, and they weren't.

When there is a consensus and everyone is wrong, that's understandable and forgivable.

However, there have been times where teams like the Braves have gone against the consensus and taken a guy much higher than where the consensus projected him, because they thought they were smarter than everyone else, and that rarely works.

1st round guys like: Jamie Arnold (football player), Jacob Schumate (3-5 round consensus), Chad Hutchinson (football), AJ Zapp (3-5 rd consensus), Troy Cameron, Scott Thorman (consensus was that he was an air conditioner, he was), McCay McBride & Josh Burris (football), Richard Lewis (college 2B), Francouer (football) & Dan Meyer, Atilano & Salty, Joey Devine & Beau Jones, Cody Johnson (another air conditioner), Cory Rasmus, Steve Evarts, Jon Gilmore, Brett Devall, etc. Most of those picks were late in the first because the Braves were winning. But that's still a lot of fail.

Even when the Braves didn't fail in the 1st Round (Wainright - mis-evaluated internally, Heyward, Francouer, etc.) they still made some questionable decisions. Even taking Mike Minor, who was far from a complete fail but no star, they passed on available talent such as: Mike Leake, Drew Storen, AJ Pollock, Shelby Miller, Randall Grichuk,Tyler Skaggs & Mike Trout.

You can make the case that other teams missed out on Trout, et al and you would be right. My point is the Braves, for whatever reason, appear to me to have historically fallen in love with their own genius in the 1st round and have largely picked busts, many times busts that the rest of the industry thought would be busts. When the industry has applauded the Braves 1st round selection (Heyward, Chipper) the picks have mostly worked out. When the industry questions the Braves selection, and the Braves smirk, wink and give the impression that they know something no one else knows, you can usually wright that guy off.

Fortunately, for whatever reason, they have fared much, MUCH better in the second round.

Every organization falls in love with their own genius at times, and every organization picks busts. Pretending the Braves do that more often than others is asinine. They built a great farm system that renewed itself for years, they have been ahead of the game more often than they've been behind it.
