I'm really not sure what you're trying to argue.

Justin Upton hit 29 HR last year and was one of the top hitters in the league. Gattis hit 22 bombs in 400 PAs. Jason . . . yeah, Jason quit hitting HRs, but he also had a career low (full season) year for strikeouts. Those are the guys you're talking about, right? Those are the guys at issue, and the ones you're taking veiled (or not so veiled) shots at. What's wrong with that production and why wouldn't you want it in the lineup this year?

That was the pillar of the offseason banter (of how could we score any runs with this group) if memory serves. Now whether or not it should have been is another matter.

FYI I watched the whole game last night (sadly). Just watched it upstairs with my roommate rather than near my cpu. I'll do better next time

The points you make bear repeating once in a while. At the risk of being accused of being repetitive. The main issues with last year's offense were the production at center and third. The overall offense was likely to improve just simply because we were unlikely to have a repeat of what occurred at center and third. Plus there was the likelihood of a rebound from Simmons. And Freddie was off a bit, especially with runners in scoring position.

It seems odd to believe that an offense that was bad can be improved by replacing its more productive players with inferior replacements. But that seems to be the implicit argument being made. I don't see it being made explicitly, from which I suppose I can draw some reassurance about how much stupidity people are willing to spout even on a message board.

Not sure why folks are getting defensive. There's certainly improvement from 3b and CF and probably 2b, but there is a big drop off in LF and C, and likely RF when all is said and done.

The folks who replaced LF and C and RF preformed EXTREMELY well in April. The upgrades at 3b, CF, and 2B happened as expected and will likely continue to. But the LF, RF, and C will likely see a big drop off over the long haul - and stating that reasonable argument really gets to some people, for some reason

It seems non-controversial to me. There is room for debate about other stuff, like whether the return we got for Gattis, Upton and Heyward was good enough. But the basic proposition that the replacements in left, right and catcher weaken us offensively is something about which there really isn't much room for debate.

Regardless of the narrative and what happens at the end of the season the goal was to be good in 2017. I think the plan is looking good at this time.

Not if we don't improve the offense. And apparently nobody believes we could sign anyone like Justin Upton so we will need to trade

But the improvement is going to come from players down on the farm and more than likely a future trade. Also, we are not sure what the budget is going to look like in the future as well.

I hope you will understand that some of us take a different perspective and do not apply a 100% discount to whatever happens to the major league team in 2015.

I want a competitive team as well but I am not an impatient fan. I don't believe its the Braves God given right to win every year.

I'm a very patient fan too. I followed guys like Justice, Avery, Merker, Glavine and Smoltz through the farm system during the Dark Years. I was an enthusiastic supporter of rebuilding through the farm system during those years. I do feel very differently about this rebuild because I believe we had a competitive foundation for 2015 (and beyond for that matter). We have improved the longer term outlook by punting on 2015. But you can always do that. To me there has to be a calculus behind the decision to punt and it has to do with where you expect to be on the win curve without punting. The answer I come up with is very different now than it was for the Dark Years period.
