Now is the time to sign Kimbrel with Philly worrying about Harper.

I remember how unbearable it was to be around Braves fans when Maddux signed.

Hopefully the white Sox get Harper. If not, I hope they make the Phillies go 37 million a year for 10 years

Except the Braves were coming off winning the division and signed the best pitcher in baseball. Padres came off a losing season and spent 20 million for a 1B to put up a 720 OPS.

    We were.

Fans are fans, and always want their teams to sign the flashy guys whether their teams are good or not. Padres fans were thrilled when Hosmer was signed just as they were when Preller went nuts and brought in all those players the winter he was hired. It was exciting. Didn't work out.

Funny thing though - it didn't destroy the organization, and here they are a few years later with Hosmer, Machado, and loads of young talent on the way.

Yep. Keep using the numbers AFTER the signing to prove your point. Given that reasoning, Machado's about to becoma a .240, 15 HR a year guy.

    Should have just stopped trying.

3/90 never made sense for Machado and therefore wasn't a legit offer. The only way it semi made sense for him is if teams were front loading contract offers in the neighborhood of 100 million or less over his first 5 years. He could potentially cash in again on a 200 million dollar contract in 3 years and earn upwards of 60 extra million over this time than he could have earned. But even then, Machado would have had to given up between 100-150+ million in guaranteed money. There was only a minuscule chance he would be interested in such a deal and that chance completely vanished once he was offered 10/300.

Can someone sell me on why adding Kimbrel would be a good thing? You'd be giving up our second round draft pick and the draft pool money that comes with it (basically $1 million) to invest in an aging reliever whose velocity is down, walks are up and strikeouts are down.

I know everyone is desperate for a move, and I'm falling into that group too, but am I missing something on why Kimbrel should be the move?

It's wasn't hard to see Hosmer going to San Diego and bombing considering he sucked in 2016 and 2014. He's very Chris Johnson like in that his offense is BABIP fueled. It was a bad signing then and even worse now. Machado is a future HOFer and is a good signing. Had they waited a year the could have had both Harper and Machado. Hosmer is a case of spending money just to spend it to make fans like you happy.

yep. harper would probably be a padre right now if hosmer weren't taking up that payroll.

Just stop. Maddux was in his mid 20's and coming off a Cy Young and as I recall had the lowest ERA in baseball over 1988-1992. Hosmer was a slightly above average 1b with one season at a great (not elite) level. It was an terrible decision any way you spin it. And this is coming from someone who has been a Hosmer fan over the years.

I thought I read here it was a 3rd round pick. Is it 2nd or 3rd?

Nostalgia. Kimbrel just doesn't make any sense for the Braves with what he's wanting to be paid and what we would have to give up.

I doubt we sign anymore impact FA's but the best fit right now for the Braves would be Kuechel.

Velocity is only down after it peaked in 2016-2017. He's still throwing harder than he was earlier in his career. And BB rates fluctuate, especially with relievers. K's are still at an elite level.

Everything I've seen is that it's our third highest pick, which would be our second rounder because of the Stewart comp pick.

    Ahhh, ok thanks

ETA... this is a garbage rule BTW. The Carter pick this year shouldn't count in the 3rd pick count
