"For all his tattooings he was on the whole a clean, comely looking cannibal."
I was surprised Gausman had such similar results as Archer after watching his defense behind him in Baltimore. It seemed multiple "hits" a game might be outs on a good defensive team.
I think Sanchez will help him if Gausman will let him, hopefully we are looking at another Jake A. situation maybe even better.
Like I've said a couple times, I'd wait to make a full judgement on Gausman. It's possible there's nothing there, but I think this might be Folty pre 2018 Braves FO with the new analytics. Even if not, leaving the AL East, leaving the AL, I think he's a 3.5-4 ERA simply due to that. That may not seem like something exciting, but with his ability to pitch innings, that's a good pitcher to slot into the middle of the rotation and forget about as long as he's healthy as a FO.
However while there might be "something there", I'd temper expectations some, I don't think this ends up being Arrieta all over again.
Aggression with prospects is fine, but being stupid is not. There should be a way to find a happy medium between a Pirates like idea of being overly cautious with prospects and going stupidly fast with prospects.
He was impressive in an extra inning game vs the A's in Oakland where he went 9 and gave up two hits. O's scored nothing for him though and lost it in extras 2-0. He could've had a complete game shutout that game with just a run. Hopefully we see him pitch games like that more regularly with us.
Gausman showed glimpses but he must have been having flashbacks of the Baltimore defense.

Id love to be viewed like the Dodgers and Astros and be able to bring the absolute best case scenario out on every SP that walks through our doors.

I was checking to see how the prospects we traded to the O's did to finish the season after the trade. Everyone of them has been bad to terrible with the O's. While it's a smaller sample it might be we gave almost nothing or at best very little for Gausman.

Another point to note, had we made a splash for Archer instead of Gausman, we'd not have clinched the division already and in fact this would be still an undecided division. Archer has been pretty bad in Pittsburgh and rarely goes more than 5 too, which would have made our bullpen situation much worse. Gausman going deep in some key games and winning them really helped us.
In August, Archer went 4.1, 5.0, 5.0, 4.0, 4.0 innings per start for Pittsburgh. His best starts came in Sept. vs us when he actually made it 6 inning and his last vs KC where he went 7 after only going 5 inning in his previous start. These type of starts really wear out a bullpen.

With their new teams
fWAR
Gausman 0.9
Archer 0.5
bWAR
Gausman 1.1
Archer 0.1
Clear winner here. AA strikes again.

And we have O'Day for the bullpen next year.
