Does this factor in streaming and the content that Netflix, Google, and Amazon are making? IMO that is the future and it scares Disney. This is a move to protect themselves from someone like Apply buying them out in 5 years.

This was a move made by Disney to destroy Netflix. Disney is coming out with a streaming service next year. Think of all the great shows and movies Disney has. Now you can add Fox stuff on top of that and prime and Netflix couldn’t compete.

Disney also basically took ownership of MLb and the NHL this summer.

There is some pretty damn good television and film owned by neither Disney nor Fox.

    Netflix will do just fine.

I recommend Steven Spielberg's The Post, especially to those under age 40. I imagine there will be those who complain about the movie's ideological slant and it's not a flawless movie, but it gives a really solid depiction of the issues at play during that era. Stellar cast. David Cross is a rare serious role along with his now more-heralded Mr. Show co-star Bob Odenkirk playing a larger role. In addition, Streep, Hanks, Rhys, Whitford, Letts, Greenwood, Plemmons, Coon. Stellar job by all.

Really enjoyed the strong mélange of comedy and tragedy in I, Tonya.

The Disaster Artist is the only other film for which I'm really jonesing, at the moment—though I'm sure I'm missing some good ones. Indeed, sounds like The Post is one.

I want to see that as well. Hostiles has gotten mixed reviews, but that is also on my list. Something about Rosamund Pike in homespun is so very alluring to me.

Hostiles is worth the watch. It's getting some laughably bad reviews from the political right for a supposed anti-American message, but it's an elegantly shot movie with a lot of layers. Great acting from Christian Bale and a strong supporting cast.

    Watched it last night.

I enjoyed it but something felt missing. Like i watched a mini series stuffed into a 2 hour movie. Something at the core was missing but the actual production was superb.

12 Strong was very good. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't already. Not really your typical hardcore America pride movie that so many recent war films seem like they are. And while Chris Hemsworth may be the star, it isn't really centered around him either.

I saw that Mudbound was nominated in several categories and it was released on Netflix from the get-go, so I watched it. It's a pretty good movie. A bit predictable and the characters are cut-outs to some extent, but it's moving and pertinent.

Sav, totally agree with your take on Hostiles. A lot of beautiful pieces that aren't quite glued together.

I, Tonya is a pretty much must-see for both the reasons jpx7 cites and the clear-eyed look at class differences in America. I've read both Hillbilly Elegy and White Trash, but I, Tonya was more powerful than either. The acting is superb. Margo Robbie and Allison Janney have both been nominated in their respective categories, but Sebastian Stan, Julianne Nicholson, and Paul Walter Hauser play their parts extremely well. I went into the movie expecting more of a comic romp, but there is some real substance here.

Solo trailer looks decent for all the drama that’s been happening behind the scenes

Black Panther is crushing it in the reviews. 100% after 72 reviews on RT so far. Can't wait to watch it.

Really the behind the scenes drama was the directors. Lord and Miller wanted to turn it into something more in their wheelhouse and make it an action comedy ala 21 Jump Street. They were changing Kasden's work and taking way too long to shoot, rumors were one day they were chilling in the cockpit of the millenium falcon waiting for one shot and not using the rest of the day to shoot. They're pretty great directors and writers in their own accord but it didn't mesh with the Disney model, Howard being a much safer more conventional choice is almost certainly going to make the better film. Howard apparently was greeted on set with applause and then took off and they ran through everything. The fear with this is you wind up with something like the Hobbit where it was all GUillermo Del Toro'd up and then Peter Jackson came in with minimal time to make it his, but from what I read Howard wasn't going to reinvent the wheel, just get it back on track.

Black Panther was good. Along with the first Captain America it's the most comic book accurate movie Marvel has made.

50PoundHead or Forever Fredi, have either of you caught Phantom Thread? I'm a huge fan of both PTA and DDL individually, as well as their previous collaboration especially, but this is a much quieter, local film than the bubbling, searing indictment of globalized petro-mania that was There Will Be Blood. It's also perversely sweet, richly dark despite its shimmering couture color-palette.

Given the more socially relevant, "important" films this year—such as Get Out and The Big Sick (neither of which, full disclosure, have I yet seen)—I doubt it wins much at the Academy Awards; but it's a nice note for Day-Lewis to "retire" on (we'll see how long that lasts), as well as a nice pivot from the frenzied Pynchon treatment of Anderson's preceding film.

    Loved it.

Everything about it was well done. DDL never disappoints.

I also very much loved Call Me By Your Name. Never seen a movie that's focued mainly on gay romance, but i think anyone can appreciate how well done the movie is from the score as well as the two lead performances. I'm trying to go see it again before it leaves theaters.
