The fact that Donaldson has simply been "effective" - and not exciting at all - will push the upper level management back into the old ways the organization used to look at high-end contracts. If they're not getting MVP/All-Star level production from the players with the biggest contracts, they're just going to go the safe route and make the shrewd business decisions rather than push to add big pieces in order to contend. Could've saved $23 million to put towards the debt without the Donaldson addition. Why get into a bidding war with the Cubs for Kimbrel (whether you can afford to or not) when you can pay down all that debt? This franchise is about real estate and the bottom line after all.

If they're not getting a substantial "deal", they're not adding pieces.

I think AA is trying to throw a smoke screen so nobody thinks he had a deal in place before the deadline. If we had holes on offense and the rotation then I’d say maybe not CK but a lesser option, but with the bullpen being the only weakness I’d say say get Kimbrel and one other arm like Smith and see what happens. Adding those 2 would put us ahead of the Phillies imo.

I agree that Kimbrel on a 4 month contract seems like the obvious move. If he signs such a deal it better be with the Braves or fans will have legit reason to complain.

I’m guessing other moves will wait until closer to the deadline so needs can be assessed a while longer. The last thing the Braves need is to blow their wad on the BP now, and then have JD get hurt and Riley regress with no ammo left to patch up the offense.

However, I expect the dynamics of the new trade deadline to have an impact. My thinking is that the smart teams will put out more enticing offers early with a clock attached to them and not be willing to be driven into the deadline.

They appear to be throwing money around at any thing that appear decent.

I could see us signing Kimbrel with our need for bullpen help and being the fact he would probably prefer the Braves and “might” be a tad more willing to take something reasonable.

Who would lose their spot if we singed DK....Gausman??
