    Braves make "sweeping" layoffs

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Braves have made "sweeping layoffs" within their organization.
The layoffs include several of their top veteran pro scouts as well as amateur scouts and their player development and business operations departments. The Braves released a statement saying that they believe now is the time to manage their business "with greater efficiency" and the decisions were accelerated due to the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Braves are owned by publicly-traded Liberty Media. We could see similar cost-cutting measures by other teams in the weeks to come.

I just got my lay off letter as a volunteer scout for the team. They cited the reason not because of COVID but because I only used Cheff’s mothers espn the mag subscription as my only source I ever used. Pretty bummed to say the least.

This just goes to further explain AA’s lack of moves at the deadline. Next year our payroll will be back to the low 100’s.

Well, the great Marge Schott once uttered when firing a bunch of scouts: "All they do is sit around and watch baseball games."

This is an excuse to do stuff corporations want. A lot of teams are going to go to video scouting and models.

I think teams that invest in real scouting and player development will have a real advantage.

This is not surprising but a concern. I'd like for us to invest more in player development.

I wonder if the whole CoVID-19 thing is going to speed up the proposed contraction of the minor leagues and a reduction in the number of rounds of the draft to 20 (or something in that neighborhood). That will have the ripple effect of reducing a lot of international activity (and maybe Latin America starts its own sets of leagues ala Japan and Korea) because there won't be enough teams to accommodate the number of players teams commonly sign. I could be reading too much into this, but it would seem the time would be ripe for MLB to aggressively push some of the reforms to the draft and player development process they were batting around. Batting around? Are we talking about the Orioles third inning last night?

Sandoval plus all the food they had to buy to feed him. Can't believe they just didn't go buy a ranch.

Hopefully these are who keepndrafying bums like Gilmartin, Kyle Wrighr, and all these other supposedly high floor prospects who never even reach that floor.

I dont know about Wright yet but Gilmartin pretty much reached a high floor when he found his wife.

I'm sure that a good bit of it is covid tightening, but layoffs can be opportunities to clear dead weight and kind of re-set salary banding at lower rates sometimes. I'm sure many of these jobs are positions that the Braves will eventually need to fill.

I'll be interested to see if this is followed up with Anthopolous style hires a little down the road.

    My condolences.
