    RIP.

Sad that we likely know what McConnell and Trump are going to do now.

I dunno. Lots of R seats are currently sitting exposed. THere's I believe 7 seats from the republican side that are very vulnerable, and another 3 or so that are potentially vulnerable. Add in slamming the door on some potentially vulnerable dem seats. After 2016, Mitch could expose all his republican allies to his own politicking. Given that not even his seat is truly safe, I don't know if he presses this year. I know Trump will be railing on him for it.

Well, McConnell has thrown the gauntlet down now.

He says Trump's nominee will get a vote on the floor.

The politics of this is fascinating. It puts Collins and Gardner in impossible situations. But a confirmation fight will probably help the GOP in all the other Senate races where it is defending a seat. It's unclear if having a nomination fight moves the needle much in the presidential race. Given he is behind, it makes sense from a political point of view for very poorly chosen to try to shake things up by nominating someone. My guess is it would help him slightly.

I have no problems with the jurisprudence of Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. My guess is someone similar will get nominated if the GOP decides to try to move through a confirmation.

I don't think he'll have the votes. The only really vulnerable dem is Jones, only other kind of one is Peters. Conversely Gardner, McSally, Perdue, Ernst, Collins, Dains and Tills are all vulnerable to some point. Given the purpling nature of NC and GA I don't think they'll risk it.

McConnell would be an absolute fool not to try to get a justice approved.

I don't see any reason a GOP senator should not support it

Honestly, if I was Trump I wouldn't want a nominee. I would tell my base that if they want a conservative justice they have to vote for me and the Republican senators. It's a bold move but it's probably the better option as far as not pissing off the on the fence crowd with the most blatant hypocrisy we've seen.

That was on the table anyways. Everyone knew RBG wasn't going to make it through another term

Every political ad will simply be

"The American people are perfectly capable of having their say on this issue, so let’s give them a voice. Let’s let the American people decide. The Senate will appropriately revisit the matter when it considers the qualifications of the nominee the next president nominates, whoever that might be.” - Mitch McConnell

For the vulnerable Pubes (which there are a lot more than Dems) this could be exactly what the DNC wants. The clearest most public firing squad to shoot the republican senators who held this opinion in 2016. It could lead to a strong flip in the Senate. THe Dem goal is to get to even 50/50 if this goes through and the dems do their job right it probably sways to at least 53/47 but honestly could go 55/45 though that's very unlikely.

I'll remind everyone here that Shumer wants to kill the filibuster and pack the courts... why on earth shouldn't the GOP play by simple norms?

He's gonna do what's best for his caucus. That's his job. Two of them will get hurt by a confirmation fight. The rest get helped to varying degrees. You don't think this will help them in races in places like Alaska, Montana, Kansas, Iowa? You bet it will. It will help to a lesser degree in North Carolina and Arizona too.
