The Doumit move tells me they really wanted to be able to pinch hit Gattis when he isn't starting again this year. Doumit being able to catch at least in an emergency situation makes that more likely knowing Fredi. Gattis hit a lot of pinch hit homeruns last year so freeing him up to do so again is likely a wise move.

The potential of Youk regaining his old form and producing like old is far better than your average bench utility guy.

Do you think Gilmartin solo would net Jeff Baker?
    They are both free agents

    Jeff Baker?
Youks wants to stay on West coast. I think he would have been an interesting option.

Baker has put up OPS of .685, .656 and .905 the last three seasons.

It is likely his 2013 numbers were a small sample fluke. This is a guy who over his career has played in very favorable parks-Coors, Wrigley, Arlington. I wouldn't want him as my main bat on the bench.

One has a career OPS of .760 and is 32. The other has an OPS of .766 and is 32.

Thanks for that post. I'm not going to try to start an anti-deep stats rant (because deep stats have helped refine Doumit as a player), but I think what we see here is that a lot of the early excitement about Doumit (and I remember a lot of stat-heavy folks from the Scout board days were gaga over the guy was dampened by a closer look at Doumit's defense and the funny thing is the guys who actually watch baseball for a living knew all along what the stats finally came around to proving. Doumit is a one-dimensional guy that is probably best served by being a 300 AB guy off the bench than a starter.

People are forgetting the braves needed a left handed bad for the bench. Doumit was not acquired because he can catch. He was acquired because he is a lefty bat.

I do believe the braves wanted Eric Chavez because minutes after the Doumit deal was announced Chavez had re upped with the D-Backs.

Don't think those 2 moves are not connected because they are.

    Gattis is the everyday catcher
    Laird in the back up
    Betancourt wil be in AAA

Nothing changed from what happened yesterday.

The Braves have Evan Gattis, Gerald Laird and Christian Bethancourt as internal options at catcher, but Bethancourt could require more seasoning, Laird is a backup and Gattis has serious OBP concerns. He alsos struggled against right-handed pitching (.236/.284/.473), which is where Doumit exceeds (.270/.330/.454).
    Doumit isnt starting.

    Gattis will barring injuries.

I'm not saying he's going to be a productive major league pitcher, but trading him for a 33 year old defensively iffy $3.4MM bench bat (going into his FA year) is not a particularly eye-popping return. Especially in terms of value alone.
Gilmartin is probably our 12th-13th best SP including ones in the majors, not a huge deal at all.

I largely agree—as do, I think, most posters in favor of this deal—but the key point is that the Braves, by all accounts, acquired Doumit precisely to be "a 300 AB guy off the bench". Indeed: I don't think anyone wants him starting if it can be at all helped, but he can stand in the outfield and he can crouch behind the plate (the latter being very relevant because Fredi Gonzalez needs a palladium third-catching option if he's ever to utilize his primary catcher as a PH on off-days).

Meanwhile: I can't speak for anybody else, but I was personally hoping Gilmartin never started a game for the major-league Braves, because I had no faith in his ability to pitch at the highest level, while I have a lot more faith in pitchers who have passed him in the past year or so. Maybe he surprises—and Minnesota is probably a good home for him in this regard—but to me the cost of Doumit was negligible so the question is really how he should be used and what he can bring to the bench in 2013.
"For all his tattooings he was on the whole a clean, comely looking cannibal."

That's exactly what we traded for. A solid bench bat that should get 250-300 AB's with pop and can play multiple positions IF a worst case scenario happened injury wise. He's here for the bench.

There seems to be some question as to his being able to play multiple positions. Play being the questionable part of that. Just a reminder tho when trying to figure out this move.

Was there really that much difference between Doumit and Reed Johnson other than SH vs RH. Johnson at 1/3rd the costwould seem worth looking at.

I agree with both the recent posters (jpx7 and emk418) that we acquired Doumit for the bench and I wanted no part of Gilmartin. The point I was trying to make along with the Fangraphs article is that Doumit is a pretty limited guy and is suited for the bench. I have no beef about the deal. Doumit should come in handy.

I understood your points and agree with everything you said. It seems we've both been basically saying the same about Doumit. I was also looking for you to post your thoughts on the deal, esp. since you've got to see him play as regularly as any of us (since you're in Twins territory).

It's a fair article. I completely agree that Doumit will very rarely catch for us if ever. Maybe once a while to just get him some AB's if needed. It's Gattis and Laird and if something happens long term CB comes up. But he at least gives us the possibility of him catching for us in an emergency or being the back up catcher if we use Gattis or Laird as a pinch hitter.
