Obvious to me that Anthopoulos based this signing on the player's initials.

Braves complete Tommy Milone trade (I can't believe Milone wasn't given a QO) by sending A.J. Graffanino and Greg Cullen to the Orioles.

I kind of had a soft spot for Graffanino as someone who might make for a utility guy, but he had that lost season and disappeared from my consciousness. I'm not sure I remembered who Greg Cullen is. He's a 23 year old out of Niagara.

I guess this was a fair package.

Same here. Graffanino was injured almost all of 2019 and with the 2020 minor league season scotched, so he really hasn't played in two years. Like you, I thought he had possibilities as a back-up IF who could hit just enough so you could keep his fielding prowess (which is supposedly his calling card). Baseball was crawling with guys like that 30-40 years ago. Not so much anymore.

Cullen was the NCAA batting champ in 2018 (at Niagra), but he's a one-position guy at this point whose bat will absolutely have to carry him for him to have a chance.

I see the Braves put Carlos Paraguante on their instructional league roster even though he was terrible at Rome in 2019. They must see him as the SS that allows them to move these other guys whom they obviously view as depth/filler.

So the deal, like you say, isn't a bad deal in any way. That said, I'm still disappointed that they even bothered obtaining Milone. I really got a belly laugh out of write-up on the deal at MLBTradeRumors, where the writer pointed out that as bad as Milone was, his K/BB was excellent. Of course it was excellent. Why should a hitter take a walk when the cost/benefit of putting the ball in play against Milone was so high? Hitters' slash against him was .449/.462/.918 during his short stint with the Braves (Yeah, yeah, yeah, small sample size). Only negative for the hitters would be if they drooled too much anticipating Milone's offerings that they slipped in the resulting mud puddle on the way out of the batters' box.

Odd move to me, but Tomlin strikes me as a guy who would pay the Braves to let him continue to play major league baseball. Not a bad 13th pitcher on a 13-man staff in that he can go multiple innings more than once a week out of the bullpen.

Just hope AA doesn't wind up coming in half a million shy of the asking price of someone we actually NEED - really tough to convince me that one of Newk/Touki/Ynoa/any number of the other young arms with options couldn't have filled that role for half that price (when you factor in the option, it's $1.25 million).
Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

Agree. The move does look premature. Anthopoulos must view Tomlin as more than filler, but I doubt the market for Tomlin (if there truly is one) was hot enough to force a move this early in the off-season.

Emergency 5th starter/long man in the pen is worth that every year. He throws strikes.

Can’t hate on it. I feel better with him in the bump than a lot of folks we rolled out there

I don't see anyone saying it's a bad move. I think the consensus is it's an odd move this early in the off-season. Given the changing nature in the use of pitching staffs, having a guy on the staff who has a bit of a rubber arm and can give you multiple innings on relatively short rest is a good thing to have. It's not an easy role for a young pitcher to assume. There's always a question on the quality of the innings Tomlin can provide, but if the front office and Snitker view him as a positive contributor and influence, I can see the sense in it from that perspective.

I don’t think the money is too much for Tomlin and while I get that some may view it as premature there is value in locking in the pieces you want especially if you can get them at a reasonable price. Ynoa and Wilson will still have their opportunities as well.

    Braves sign Drew Smyly

The Atlanta Braves announced the signing of southpaw Drew Smyly to a one-year, $11MM deal, per a team release (via Twitter). Smyly is represented by Frontline Athlete Management.

The 31-year-old Smyly has appeared in the Majors for the Tigers, Rays, Rangers, Phillies, and Giants, accumulating a 4.13 ERA/4.15 FIP across 188 games (111 starts) totaling 710 2/3 innings over seven years.
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;......

And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
