Recently the Braves released a t-shirt that said "Ball Player" in the language of syllabary.

The proceeds go to the New Kituwah Academy and Cherokee Speakers Council. This is the right way to go.

Let's ignore so much about this that is utterly ridiculous, and just point out the obvious that the only thing being removed is the caricature of Native Americans that America created to make it easier to sell the whole "savage" storyline. The fact that you think this **** in anyway represents a cultural reference to Native Americans is exactly the reason it should be changed.

I love it. Having visited Cuyahoga National Park in October, it's gorgeous, and all around the Cleveland area. Very distinct to Cleveland, and still can keep a Native American name if they want it.

My daughter is I competitive cheer. Man the pc group would have a field day with that group. The whole cheer company she is with is all tribal names. The call sign is A-C-E whoop whoop what’s your tribe. Then the team is like the cherokees. Or warriors. Or Braves. All teams my daughters have been on.

Chicago Blackhawks and KC Chiefs should be changed before we would be on the chopping block based on the PC-police rankings.

Chief and Brave are both ranks within a tribe, right? The fact one is more politically correct than another is proof this thing is an absurdity.

That said, the Braves could drop the tomahawk and do a marketing campaign this year based upon Atlanta being the "cradle of the Civil Rights Movement" and the Brave people that participated. The year after they could highlight the railroad to the mid-west and the Brave people that participated. The year after that focus on Coke and the Brave people that launched a global empire out of Atlanta.

Its a word that becomes a proper Noun only in respect to the baseball team now located in Atlanta. Hard to do that with Chief, Redskin Seminole or Blackhawk.

Pretty funny that all sorts of people come out screaming about how ridiculous and and bothersome it is to ask a sports team to change its name or logo because some people find it insulting. Like it or not, if you're not Native American your opinion on the subject carries exactly zero weight.

The Redskins became the Football Team months ago - what happened to all the folks that were up in arms about that? Listening to the screaming about that would have made you think the world was about to end. What any team is called apparently doesn't change the time it takes for the earth to rotate around the sun, but if someone finds it offensive, change the *amn name - I promise that won't make it any less fun to watch Acuna play.

It's always kind of amused me that I ended up a fan of both the Braves and the Chiefs (while my college sports allegiance requires a profound hatred of a school with a Native-themed nickname). I think in theory it's possible for the Braves to massage this and make it work, but there's a lot of bad blood built up over the years. You have decades worth of Tomahawk Chops and Chief Noc-A-Homas and dudes in head dresses and big, elaborate drum music. It's hard to come back from that and find a way to sell "Braves" to a skeptical public.

The Chiefs might be a little bit more salvageable, because they've never been quite as all-in on the Native iconography as some of the other teams in question. I would still bet on them having a new nickname at some point in the next 5-10 years.
