I went to urgent care last night and I had to get on the scale and it depressed the hell out of me. Up about 50 pounds in a year. I’m a tall guy so I can carry it better, but I can definitely feel it on my knees and lack of energy.
Pace is secondary to distance.
Just get the miles in KG.

A long time ago I finished in the top 10 of the Jersey Shore Half Marathon. Passed a bunch of runners I had never beaten before the last couple miles. The athletic highlight of my life.
Still can run a 7 minute mile.

Best i've done on a mile is low 6. I think i could sneak under it with a few months of practice.
I really like a trail run. I did a 4 miler with a vest after an outpatient procedure a few months back. It added a nice challenge. I've done some as long as 12 without and liked those too depending on the terrain.
I despise road running because i find it boring.

I never ran anything shorter than 4 miles. And I did that in 24 minutes. On a dirt road.
Road running is boring. It takes a certain discipline. It helps to run with someone.
I did the DC marathon with a friend. That was my last serious race. After that second child was born and I changed jobs.

Did the BK half at a 7:45 pace. Never ran a marathon but the mrs wants to so I’ll ramp up my training again.

Back in my high school days I got as low as 5:04... never got under it.
2 years I made a drinking bet with some friends I could still break under 6... I won that bet, barely.
I would not make that same bet today. I no longer to any type of distance running... only 75-100 yard sprints

7:45 is very respectable. I recommend running a half about 2 months before the full. That'll give you an idea of what pace to run the full at (basically add 30 seconds to your half pace). I added 20 seconds and was able to sustain that for 18 miles. The last 8 were a bitch.
Oh and don't run the NY Marathon. It's got an awful bottleneck at the Verrazzano that will prevent you from running at the pace you want the first few miles.

They can't chase you if you don't run.
someone famous must have said that
"I am a victim, I will tell you. I am a victim."
"I am your retribution."
We all need to break up with J-Lo.

Seriously...I came to running late (did as little as humanly possible during my basketball/baseball days in high school)...all my personal bests for distances covered and pace came when I was 29, averaging 6:30 pace on 10Ks...now I’m 34 and can barely get to an 8:00 pace on my three time a week 4 mile runs
I was the same. Caught the running bug around 28/29. Lasted till 35 when family and job responsibilities expanded. A big part of my motivation was seeing my times drop. Once I couldn't train enough for that to keep happening I kind of lost interest. Now I run around the track for a couple miles every other day.

This was when I was 17 and peak shape.
My varsity basketball coach had this insanely dumb rule that we couldn't start if we didn't run a 6 min mile or better. We had to run it every Monday and if we didn't break 6, we couldn't start that week.
Really stupid rule but made me very motivated to run fast lol
The Covid has cancelled my last 2 half marathons, robbing me of my main motivator for staying in shape. Hopefully next spring the local race will be on again.
I didn't start running until after I turned 50, so my goal has been just to finish within the time limit, which is 2 1/2 hrs. After the 2 1/2 hrs they send a car around to make stragglers give up so they can open the road to traffic again. One year I had a cold and was plodding along really slowly. I was pissed that I wasn't going to make it and refused to quit and get in the car, just wanted to finish at my own pace. The next year they had a new rule where they take your electronic sensor from your number badge if you aren't gonna make it. My wife worked at city hall at the time and says she heard that rule was put in because some ornery foreigner refused to stop running. She kept her mouth shut about who it was.
