It's been going on forever. I remember extremely devout Orel Hershiser insinuating that he doctored balls during his great stretch. When I was growing up, it was all about Gaylord Perry and Lew Burdette loading up the ball.
Gaylord made no bones about it. You just could not tell which spot on his head, hair or hat was hiding it. He touched them all 20 times. And speaking of, did anyone notice Smyley pinching his hat bill before every pitch Sunday?
