Exactly how do you propose the Braves convince him not to take a managing job that he wants?

I guess one way would be to give him the Atlanta job though that probably doesn't make any sense.

I think the Padres should go after snit. Can you trade managers like nfl? Can a manager back out contract and take another job? I know he isn't, but am interested in this anyway

Yes a manager can be trade. Most recent example was when the White Sox traded Ozzie Guillen to the Marlins.

This is the move GMs make 1-2 seasons before losing their own job. They always scapegoat the manager first.

I would think Ron would be open to the job here or with one of the Texas teams, but I don't think he wants to be that far from home, from what I remember reading when we got him. He's pushing 70 now, and home's Louisiana.

Paying him more is probably the most direct route to take.

IIRC Leo Mazzone was making something like 100K (just for comparrison) and left for Baltimore and 500K. So I dont think anyone could fault Wash for jumping ship.

I still remember who intense the Leo Mazzone courting was back in 2005. The Yankees had a three day exclusive window to sign him but ultimately Baltimore got him because then manager Perlozzo was Mazzone’s best friend and they gave him a three year contract which is unusual for position coaches. Baltimore even gave up a prospect so they could hire him before Leo’s contract with the Braves ended a month later.

Leo was hired 2 years later and never seen again.

    Bizarre.

And for what ever reason the Braves had no interest in bringing him back during the down years.

He didn’t have a great reputation working with younger pitchers. Listening to Leo even now he is definitely a “my way or the highway” type.

I love Leo. Always will. But it’s probably for the best things ended in Atlanta on a high note.

Mazzone was overrated. Still a good coach but when you have 3 hall of famers in their pre-primes its easy to get good production out of the rest of your staff.

Paying him more to coach here than another team would pay him to be their manager?

He absolutely was not overrated. 0.63 improvement in ERA average for pitchers with Braves/Leo versus elsewhere.

Anecdotally, Jaret Wright, John Burkett, Mike Remlinger, Damian Moss, Chris Hammond, just off the top of my head. Leo was a boss.

MLBTR arbitration projections are out - AA's going to have to make some seriously tough decisions this winter if they're close (and they typically are)...

    Dansby - $10,100,000
    Fried - $7,100,000
    Riley - $4,300,000
    Jackson - $3,800,000
    Rodriguez - $3,100,000
    Soroka - $2,800,000
    Minter - $2,100,000
    Arcia - $2,100,000
    Heredia - $1,600,000
    Matzek - $1,500,000
    Camargo - $1,400,000
    Dayton - $1,200,000
    Santana - $1,000,000
    Newk - $900,000

Assuming they choose to let Duvall, Pederson, and Tomlin walk and Rodriguez, Arcia, Camargo, and Dayton are DFAd that puts payroll at just over $145 million if Freddie gets $25 million and Ozuna is part of the roster. That's with Pache/Heredia as your CFs, Contreras as your backup C, Anderson, Ynoa, and Muller as your #3/#4/#5 SPs, a pen of Smith, Jackson, Matzek, Webb, Minter, Santana, Lee, and Touki with no LF and two open bench spots - and that's IF Acuna were somehow ready for Opening Day (which isn't likely going to happen). DFAing Minter and replacing him with Davidson/Newk/Strider/Elder/veteran making the minimum would shave off another million and a half or so.

That would leave roughly $7 million to sign a LF, backup SS, and final bench piece. 2022 payroll's obviously going to have to be over $150 million - exercising Pederson's option would push you past that, but you could try to get by with him in RF, Ozuna in LF, and a rotating DH until Acuna's back if you think Rosario or Duvall will get more than $7.5 million (and/or multiple years) on the open market.

Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

    Nice work.

The Rodriguez deal looked good because the acquisition price was so reasonable. I don't know if they let him go or not, but he's been a disappointment and I was really surprised he wasn't on the post-season roster.

A month ago, I thought Duvall was a lock to be back, but his option is mutual and I wouldn't be surprised if he opted out and tried to get a firm multi-year deal somewhere. I don't like him that much as a player, but the DH can cover a guy like that to some extent. I can't see Pederson at $10 MM (his mutual option number). If you can put up with Rosario's brain f*rts, lousy plate discipline, and uneven defense, he may be a reasonably-priced option.

Interesting off-season ahead. It would be nice if we could truly count on Pache to be ready.
