    Rethinking law breaking

Been thinking about some ways to reduce negative police encounters

    1. Don't break the law
    2. Don't resist arrest
    3. Don't be an idiot when encountering police
    4. Keep your hands on the steering wheel when pulled over
    5. Keep your hands out of your pockets when dealing with police outside of a car
    6. Fight police in the courtroom, not on the street

Stop convincing women it’s a badge of honor to raise kids on your own.

Make it more difficult for men to walk away from their children.

Stop making scum bags like George Floyd and Michael brown martyrs.

    This ain’t hard.

    7. Wear a tie
    8. Drive a nice car

I've had a few tickets/encounters with the police. The most bizarre one was when I was running late to a meeting and ran a red. The cop asked me about it and I explained why I was in a hurry. He commented on my car. Noticed the tie. And provided me with an escort to my meeting. That's service!

    Oh and no ticket!

I bet you were following 1-6 and forgot to mention that part of it. I’ve been pulled by cops a handful of times, and I’ve only gotten one ticket and at no times were I wearing a tie.

I had a friend who would keep a Bible in his glove box for this eventuality. When he got pulled over he'd take the Bible out, put it on the passenger seat, turn the radio to Christian music and try to look as wholesome as possible. It worked a fair percentage of the time.

    Yeah.

I had a much less pleasant encounter once picking my wife up from the airport. The cop flipped out and started screaming in my face. He was completely unprofessional. But I kept my cool and basically rebutted everything he said. Which I think blew his mind. I could tell he was itching to take me down.

I think these three things are a police problem, not a “breaking the law” problem.

I had a friend in high school who unbuttoned a couple buttons on her blouse. I think that works better than a bible, but not all of us have that as an option.

Depends on the predisposition of the cop.

I've put my hands outside the window on the roof of the car a few times when I was pulled over. All others I've kept them on the wheel until asked to provide my license. Then I tell the cop where and what I'll reach for. They appreciate it.

This feels like stuff was omitted on purpose but whatever.

    I'll give the details.

I was picking up at the departures level at JFK, which tends to be less of a zoo than the arrivals level. She had left the plane and was about to come out. And the cop is yelling something. But I couldnt hear what he was saying. I see my wife walking toward the car but also hear a banging noise. I get out of the car and it's the cop banging on the back of it. He starts yelling at me telling me I have to move. And I tell him I couldn't hear him but my wife is walking down to the car. He gets in my face and starts yelling even louder about me not following orders. And I tell him I would have moved the car but couldn't hear what he was saying. Which makes him start yelling even louder. By this point my wife is watching this. She asks me why I'm arguing with a cop. Which makes the cop smirk and think he won the argument. So I have my wife to thank for defusing the argument.

"I could tell he wanted to take me down"

He really just wanted you to move and stop parking in the no parking zone.

I guess I haven't conveyed how angry and wound up this dude was. He was practically foaming and within a few inches of my face. He was having a bad day I guess. Or maybe a bad life.

Probably. You also should have not been parked in a no parking zone. That tends to be frowned upon at airports.
