    NY City Mayoral Race

The primary is on June 22, with instant runoffs using ranked choice voting.

Here is what one candidate, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, is saying about defund the police. He's been running second to Andrew Yang in most of the polls.

I don't have a dog in the fight. Just find it interesting to see what the candidates are trying to sell. So far the left/activist wing hasn't coalesced behind a candidate. Should be happening soon.

Only a conservative moron could think the greatest city, the most prototypical city, in the world is a ****hole. Stay out of New York, in fact, just avoid cities. Because they're better without you.

Profile of Scott Stringer, the "establishment" candidate to extent their is one. He has generally been third in the polls. There is some speculation that the left/activist wing of the party is looking to coalesce around him in the next few weeks.

Right now it is looking like a 3 horse race between him, Adams and Yang.

Times makes the case for Kathryn Garcia, who is a longshot.

Eric Adams with the early lead. About 2% reporting.

    Looking good for Adams.

Adams btw is a demagogue who accused his opponents of trying to rig the election against him.

The result of the night was in New York's second city, Buffalo, where a candidate affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America upset the incumbent mayor. If she wins the general election, she will become the first socialist mayor of a major American city since 1960.

Can we trade Buffalo to Canada for a future draft pick

The DSA and other socialist groups will have some opportunities to show their governing chops. I think if their main interest is "revolution" they will be voted out in short order. If they find ways to improve the lives of their constituents, they will be rewarded at the polls. It is pretty simple.

I've known DSA peeps for a long time. They come in two stripes. The pragmatists and the revolutionaries. Soon enough we'll see which kind Buffalo's new mayor is.

Btw the revolutionary and pragmatic can be combined in one person. Bernie Sanders was fairly pragmatic as mayor of Burlington. For most of his Senate career, he was in revolutionary mode, an angry voice in the wilderness. He has become more of a pragmatic again in recent years, willing to negotiate for half a loaf.

With respect to Buffalo, there is nothing that precludes the Republican Party from running a serious candidate. In Buffalo or any other major city. Many blue states and cities have benefited from talented Republicans winning office. Like the DSA, however, it seems that Republicans these days come in two stripes, the pragmatists and the revolutionaries. The former seem to be in increasingly short supply. There is one major difference. The DSA is willing to do the hard work of organizing and trying to persuade voters. I don't see much in the way of similar effort on the part of Republicans. Certainly not in our major cities. It's a shame.

But I thought these nutjob socialists weren't gaining mainstream success?

That's the big underlying theme of the New York City election. There wasn't much support for the defund the police crowd.

The problem with Adams is he is an ethically-challenged machine politician with certain demagogic characteristics. I was hoping Garcia or Yang would win.

My ideal model of government would be one that is proactive on a local level and confined to things like international relations, defense, and interstate commerce on a national level (where did I get such a crazy idea?) I don't think fairly mild socialist economic policy on a local scale is necessarily bad, and certainly not as damaging as the Western Progressive policy we typically see. The problem is that most of the self styled socialists here are really just far left fringe progressives. I'm curious to see which type Walton is.

My initial impression is that she more ideologue than pragmatist. But sometimes people grow in office. They figure out that filling the potholes really is a big part of the job.
