SUNDAY MINORS FINAL 5/16/21: Why Is Arcia In AAA?

The Braves made a quick pickup early in the 2021 season when they found Orlando Arcia available. Arcia was the Brewers' primary shortstop from 2017-19 but was traded for two of the Braves' fringe big league pitchers in Chad Sobotka and Patrick Weigel. Arcia started the year 1-for-11 for Milwaukee.
He began playing for Gwinnett as the team's shortstop and became the talk of the prospect message board by hitting six home runs in his first 10 games and as of today was hitting .383 with a hefty 1.284 OPS. He's still only 26 and could be a steal if the Braves could find a big league spot for him.

    Some interesting performances yesterday.

I can't believe Mississippi manager Wyatt Toregas went for the field goal down seven late. Must have talked to Packer coach Tim LaFleur.

Nice day for Michael Harris in Rome's win.

Stephen Paolini leaps past the .100 BA barrier (the mini-Mendoza line) with a 3-hit day (but man is he having trouble making contact), but Augusta blows a big lead.

I want to be excited about Arcia, but then I look and see that Camargo's stats are in the same strata and realize--again--that the major leagues and the minor leagues are in totally different galaxies. Still a good pick-up. Weigel actually spent some time with the Brewers a couple of weeks ago. but his control has completely got to crap since his surgery. He and Sobotka are both in Nashville with the Brewers AAA club.

Sobotka looked amazing in his short stint in Atl what... 3 years ago on that playoff push? Then completely couldn’t find the zone after . He looked like the next Venters

Absolutely true, but there's a couple things not taken into account with this statement...

1.) Camargo's never been this hot - even playing a video game, and
2.) unless there is a date that they're simply not calling Arcia up before because of service time concerns, there's ABSOLUTELY no reason you bring Camargo up instead of him since Arcia is at least an option at SS.
Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

I'm not pimping Camargo (he does a pretty good job of doing that for himself), but Camargo's best ML year was a lot better than Arcia's. Granted, Arcia plays a premium defensive position (and he's decent there) so that has to be taken into account when determining overall value to a major league team. To be clear, I'm not lobbying for Camargo to be brought back up. It's pretty obvious he's a AAAA player, at least at this point in his career.

Three of the four his were singles. That's bordering on bust.

Braves OF prospect Michael Harris went 4-for-4 with a homer on Sunday for High-A Rome.
Harris has his second homer of the High-A season. With the four-hit effort, the 20-year-old is now slashing a commendable .333/.375/.511 with the pair of roundtrippers and three stolen bases. The 98th pick in 2019 out of a Georgia high school, Harris is one of the more underrated outfield prospects in baseball right now. He has a chance to hit for average and power from the left side, and his plus speed makes him likely to steal a good number of bases for good measure. There’s still some work to be done, but Atlanta’s player development system has done wonders with this type of prospect before, and it appears that he’s on the right track. Don’t be surprised if Harris is an everyday player for the Braves by the end of 2023.
