I understand but I’d really love to know which of our pinch hitters would have actually done anything there. Martin would have given up a bomb (likely to Smith) as he’s been prone to do in those situations. Matzek likely would have come out wild and gotten into a mess. Fried, not for the first time, lost focus with two outs and no one on and made a bad pitch to a cast-off player.

Probably none of them, but you make the right decision every time. Making the right move every time adds 1 base runner per week, which leads to 1 extra run per month, which leads to 1 extra win per year. And it was a win that was absolutely free.

The most intelligent teams understand this, and they make a series of decisions consistently that adds up to many wins over a full season.
