Virginia Republican gubernatorial nominee Glenn Youngkin broke with former President Trump on Thursday on whether he believes Democrats will cheat in the upcoming election.

"No, I think we're going to have a clean, fair election and I fully expect to win," Youngkin told moderator Susan Page at the first Virginia general election debate of the cycle.

Additionally, Youngkin said he did not believe there had been significant fraud in Virginia's elections.

This seems like a big deal to me. Not sure if it hurts or helps Youngkin. But I applaud his courage.

Youngkin seems like a sane, rational, intelligent man who would be a competent governor. I've made the point in other threads that various blue states have benefited from having some talented Republican governors. Virginia by now is pretty close to being a blue state. It is a bit more competitive. But the point about having a solid choice on the Republican side applies.

The rot of DC has become too high a percentage of Virginia's population. He can play the Dem lite version of a Pub as much as he likes. He doesn't have a chance in the election but it will probably set him up for a nice job as a leech at some consulting firm, or as a token "Pub" political commentator. It's an easy graft, as the Lincoln Project has shown us.

Well, I think it is very brave and principled of Youngkin to say weeks ahead of the elections that they will be fairly run and that the outcome will be an accurate reflection of will of the voters.

It's probably an accurate statement. I'm curious what you find brave about stating the position that is socially acceptable. This seems as brave to me as an actress announcing she's not just into men, or a corporation putting a rainbow in their Twitter logo during gay pride month.

It might cost him politically. Larry Elder's poll numbers dropped when he said something along those lines and he famously asked for a "mulligan."

I think they should do the right thing, which is not to engage in efforts to undermine confidence in our electoral processes. Which is why I praised Youngkin for his courageous stance.
