The surest way to shorten your window is to give big contracts to players coming off of career years - particularly when those players have never shown signs of being the guy they are during that career year. Folks seem to think Alex will throw money around just because he has it even though he's NEVER done that before.

Ozzie and Acuna get $2 million raises next year and Olson gets an additional $6 million. If neither Fried or Riley are extended, it's perfectly reasonable to expect them to get $10 million worth of arbitration raises combined. That eats up almost all the savings from Duvall and Smith. raises for Minter and McHugh will account for the rest of that. The only other significant contract coming off the books this winter is Jansen's, and Yates' raise will eat up $5 million of that. You'll also have to pay for raises for Wright and Anderson out of that money.

If the Braves give Swanson anything close to $20 million per it will completely destroy their financial flexibility moving forward unless payroll is going to get $20+ million bumps for each year they sign him.

AA has the means to sign any FA he wants this offseason. He offered Correa a deal last offseason that had to be high AAV and Verlander also. Attendance is through the roof and we have a lot of money coming off the books. If AA wants somebody he can no doubt sign them.

There aren't nearly enough basebrawls anymore.

The internet reminded me that the baseball scene in “The Naked Gun” movie, the Angels and Mariners brawled.

I’d be tempted to swap Fried and Anderson this week. Let Fried go against Nola and save Anderson for the Reds.

Whats the backstory to that brawl? I've only seen that one highlight but there's gotta be more to it.

He likely offered both guys a similar deal to what they eventually signed for, which is basically a short term deal with a high AAV. So no, he doesn't have the means to sign anything he wants. He has the means to give out high AAV deals, but only on short term contracts.

No real history other than they threw near Trouts head the night before and he didn’t like it. Then yesterday in the first inning Wantz threw behind Julio Rodriguez then later hit Winker.

If he has the money to offer a high AAV 3 year deal then yeah he has the money to offer/sign anybody. Whether they accept is another thing. He had the means to sign FF but that didn’t work out either. AA won’t do something stupid but if he doesn’t bring back Swanson he’ll get one of the other 3 SS available.

Unconfirmed rumor going around is that Turner prefers to be back on the east coast. That'd make him target #1 IMO.

I think Turner is easily a better investment than Swanson. Acuna and Turner would be tough at the top.

Your best hitter is supposed to hit #2 in the lineup....

That said. He has 25 leadoff homers in his career. Does he at all care about chasing down Henderson's record? If he does then there is no way he's coming out of the leadoff no matter what.
