The circumstances are against Close. Everything is fine until Freddie comes to Atlanta. Freddie learns from someone here about an offer.

What would he do next? He'd call Close and see if it was true. If Close gave him a satisfactory answer then we never hear any of this. Close obviously couldn't adequately explain himself.

Word gets out about Freeman firing him because of the offer. Close now has to do damage control.

Now the agent doth protest too much.

This whole agent thing is crazy. The only thing that would be crazier is if something like USC and UCLA going the Big 10……..

    Wait a minute……….

If Acuna doesn’t miss significant time and we get an additional starter (Soroka or trade), then I like our chances. If not, the Braves are pretty close to playoff locks with the expanded playoff format.
Oh well if that's what's projected let's just ink it in.

Let's not pretend Freddie was gonna accept below market value to stay with us. The deal he purportedly would have accepted from us was still above market value.

Whereas Chipper and Andruw took less than market value to extent with us. Andruw even bypassing Boras.
Higher dollar amount but arguably lower value considering the deferred money and taxes. Not to mention, he made it clear that returning to Atlanta was ultimately the goal.

I don’t think Swanson will take less to stay. He’s gonna want top dollar and I can see why. I don’t see Dansby being the player he is right now so I’d try to upgrade the spot in the offseason.

AA should give Swansons agent 2 offers and tell him he was an hour to decide or we are moving on to Turner or Correa

Ultimatums are nice when you are assured you can get either Turner or Correa. Instead of getting stuck with Arcia or some leftover no one else wanted.

If AA slow plays the SS market I think he’ll get a Correa-type deal for a star SS.

Might be a dangerous game of chicken, but Arcia represents a good enough backup plan I think.

I agree that it’s a dangerous game of chicken and I am not sure Arcia is a good enough backup plan for an entire season. Arcia is good enough coming off the bench for spells, just not sure he is an answer for 150+ games. While Swanson is no juggernaut, he is a pretty productive player and much more so than Arcia. Not sure the Braves can afford to lose that much production from their SS, especially if Riley doesn’t find last years form.

Anyone expecting Riley to have a .300 BA again might be waiting a long time. Other than the unsustainable .368 BABIP (.303 this year), Riley is exactly the same hitter he was last year.

If Arcia is truly an above average offensive performer now (and his exit velocities suggest he very well could be), having him at SS for peanuts is going to be much preferable to signing a FA SS for 5-8 years at premium dollars. Of course, that assumes the freed up cash will be used somewhere...like the OF for crying out loud.

I think Arcia is ok at SS IF:
    1. MH is actually an above average ML hitter
    2. An impact bat is acquired for LF or Ozuna becomes 90% of COVID season Ozuna

I think we need an impact bat. That bat does not have to be a SS. But AA has made it difficult w/ Rosario and Ozuna being guaranteed to be on the team.

If we are going to spend real money at SS, I'd rather invest in a guy who you think is a real impact bat. A guy who you'd still want in the line up if you to move him off of SS, even to DH. I don't see swanson as that guy.

Correct, you’re basically saying we’re gonna replace Duvall with Arcia and replace Swanson’s bat with a legit true corner outfielder

Not sure who legit true corner OF could potentially be though. Obviously it's very early and a lot will change. But just looking around the stats for players who are better than Ozuna, there's not many that are realistic, available or desirable.

There is not an obvious choice.

Ideally it would be a LHH with really good on base and some power.

Conforto is coming back from an injury and a down year. Most of his baseball card would be good.

    Nothing obvious to me.
