Nosing around the internet, I found some interesting information on Harrison Owen, one of the non-drafted free agents the Braves signed in early-August. Was a verbal commit to Auburn, but changed his mind and ended up at Cosumnes (CA) JC (where former Brave/Royal/etc. Jermaine Dye played). Owen hit .377 with 11 HRs in 38 games this spring at Cosumnes and followed that up with a .284/.408/.448 slash line in 143 PAs with the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters of the wood bat Northwoods summer collegiate league before the Braves signed him.

Added bonus for Braves' fans is that when first-round pick Owen Murphy is pitching and Harrison Owen is behind the plate, there will be an Owen/Owen battery.

Anyone know much about Geraldo Quintero or Caleb Durbin? There is a site I follow that's geared towards identifying breakouts early, and these two names have been popping up recently.

On the pitching side, they've mentioned Royber Salinas.

Fangraphs actually had Quintero as our #9 prospect- https://blogs.fangraphs.com/atlanta-...rospects-2022/. 20 years old, just promoted to High A, good BB/K numbers, good athlete that can play all over the infield but probably not long term SS.

Their write up: Quintero is in our wheelhouse: a compact, switch-hitting middle infielder with precocious feel for contact and bat control. The short-levered Quintero can let pitches travel deep and smack them to all fields, and he can even turn on top-side fastballs and yank them out to right field. While small, he’s an explosive rotational athlete, and even though his peak exit velos have been near the bottom of the big league scale to this point, hovering right around 100 mph, there might eventually be power here by virtue of the consistency and quality of his contact. He also runs extremely well and does have some experience in center field, though he has played nothing but third and second base so far in 2022. While most eyeball observers consider Quintero more of a utility prospect than someone who might play every day, we caution readers not to sleep on another twitchy, up-the-middle athlete with plus bat-to-ball skills.

Salinas is interesting because of the K numbers, wish the BBs would come down, would imagine he's a reliever long term. Durbin doesn't really interest me at all.

Quintero has performed best out of the set of IFs signed in 2018-2019. That class included Alexander Then, Jose Dilone, and Francisco Floyd. Quintero signed later in the period. One plus for Quintero is that he spent a lot of time in the OF during his first season in the Dominican Summer League. I believe Floyd received the highest bonus out of the bunch and he is now in Augusta after Quintero and Conley moved up to Rome. Floyd supposedly is a plus defender, but he's striking out about 40% of the time so that has to change for him to have any kind of chance.

The thing on Quintero is that his BB numbers have stayed pretty solid and his power has improved. Little guy.

Durbin was our 14th-rounder last year. Interesting thing about Durbin is that he struck out a grand total of 10 times in the over 90 games he played while at Washington University (of St. Louis). He's obviously in the process of changing his game a bit as his K numbers as a pro (while still solid) are much higher than they were in college. Still walks a lot and runs very well. May have a lower perceived ceiling than someone like Quintero, but he's at the level where he should be playing right now.

Quintero is a legit prospect. He outplayed Mezquita, who most like, in Augusta while being a year younger before his call up.

He’s our 3rd or 4th best position prospect, IMO I’d slot him behind Benitez and Tavares ahead of Malloy, Mezquita, and Conley.

Could we be so fortunate as to getting the rookie level Mike Soroka back before the playoffs?

What Soroka did was absolutely dominant tonight and it’s a promising first step. But I’ll be more excited when he’s not don get it against A ballers

Not sure about the playoff but it makes the Morton decision a lot easier.

I think if Morton finishes the year strong it’s going to be really difficult turning down a 1 year deal, especially since his performance has consistently improved throughout the year. Who knows how much coming back from the ankle injury impacted him early on.
