710 Minors Report: Lien, Piloto Doing Good THings In Danville

Kyle Wren has already checked in, found the Appalachian League unworthy, and moved on up. But while Wren's quick ascension and series of headlines for his play have drawn a good deal of notice, there are two other outfielders in Danville (still) that merit your attention.

Connor Lien, 19, inherited center field when Wren moved to Rome, and spent a few weeks floundering like teenagers tend to do in their early days. But Lien can circle the date of July 5th on the calendar as the day he "got it."

Barely treading water above the Mendoza line, he perked up with a 2-5 day that included a double and his first home run as a professional. He hasn't slowed since, going 9-for-22 over the last five game witih two doubles, a triple, two homers and five RBIs. The best news is that the long, lean Lien -- at 6-3, 205 -- is better rated for his defense. Speed, arm, fundamentals ... Lien's projectable tools are abundant, a 4-tool guy with power his only unknown.

Lien's comfort in center has pushed Cuban refugee Alejandro Piloto onto the fringes of the organization fighting for playing time. The 21-year-old Piloto, who dazzled in a brief DSL trial last year, is looking more and more like a perfect right fielder. He has played only six games in the field, five in right, and he has already thrown out three baserunners -- one at home, one at third and doubled one off at first.

Piloto has had few at bats and little opportunity to flash the speed he hinted at last year (seven SBs sin 11 games). in fact, he has one of each.

Both figure to remain at Danville the remainder of the year. Can either turn 2013 into a stepping stone.
    ------------
A standout indy league outfielder the Braves recently signed as a free agent, Brian Edmondson, has gone onto the Rome disabled after an undisclosed injury in Tuesday's game. Edmondson collided with the outfield wall in Lakewood attempt to track down a fly ball; at the time, the report only was that the injury was to his "left side."

Blake Brown was promoted to Rome from Danville to take his place. Brown earned a second chance at Rome by hitting .300 in six games in Danville after a .202 start to the season in Rome,

Also, pitcher Williams Perez has beem promoted to Lynchburg, joining namesake Carlos Perez with the Hillcats after a series of moves this week.
    ------------
Felix Falcon, international man of mystery, improved to 5-0 for the DSL Braves Tuesday.Details are at the bottom of this posting. I repeat: who the hell is he and how is he getting batters out?

    ITs a Cody Martin day!!!

Braves might trade one of Medlen/Minor/Beachy this offseason. Lots of arms are converging on the major league roster.

Lien is a tools guy and I love having a sprinkling of those guys in the system, but his K numbers are staggering. Looks like a project, but one worth following closely.

I expect them to see what Medlen could bring back.
