    Braves re-sign Morton

$20m for next season with an option for 2024 per Braves radio network

Not a big fan of this move. Hopefully he gets back to normal Morton next season

So stupid. Absolutely not necessary. Use the expense some where else.

Not great, but if he's a fifth guy behind Fried/Soroka/Wright/Strider and an insurance policy in the event Anderson/Elder/Muller can't stick, then it's fine.

    20 million for a 5th starter?

    Not great, Bob.

I don’t mind bringing Morton back, but not at this price. $10 million or so would be fine, but you don’t throw $20 million at a pitcher if you don’t plan on him being a positive force in your rotation, and it’s hard to plan on Morton being that guy at this point in his career. The strikeout rate is re-assuring, but there’s a very real chance that he just totally collapses next year.

Really does feel unnecessary. Fried steps in as your veteran and ace. You hope you get a repeat performance from Wright and Strider. Then you pick from the pool of Anderson, Mueller, Elder, FA veteran to fill in the back end of the rotation much cheaper than $20m.

If this prevents us from seriously upgrading some spots on this roster, this is an all around bad move.

I only say it's fine because with as much ****ing money as this team is making, I don't want to hear **** about how paying Morton 20 mil keeps us from getting whoever we want.

Count me in as not a huge fan of this. I don’t hate it like some of you, but certainly not thrilled.

The good news is Morton's stuff is still good.

Bad news is his control is shaky.

They basically just picked up his option for a million less and gave him another option for the same price.

Would have liked for AA to negotiate 15 for next year.

Morton's stuff is still there. I could see him randomly having a good year next year. It's pretty meh. Not great, not the worst.

Why would you include Soroka? Anyone who has missed 3 straight seasons should be treated as a bonus if he ever pitches again.

He started the year rough, but he's been very solid since the start of May. I selfishly wanted DeGrom, but I don't imagine the Mets will let him leave. Sures up the rotation for 23 at least. We'll have lots of options.

Morton’s stuff is still good and given his history confidence seems important to him. Maybe some certainty could be good for him. He looks like he could put it together.

Is crazy if they pay 40+ for DeGrom and in top Scherzer. That team need to improve bullpen and Edwin Diaz is FA too.

I’m fine with Morton. He still has the velo and movement he’s just been off with control.

I don’t know what other options exist to weigh against it. Don’t love it but don’t hate it. With degrom degrading before our eyes I’m not sure I want to give him 35 per year when we can just go year by year with Morton at 20.

    JUST EXTENT FRIED ALREADY!

This should have been done two years ago.

Outside of Degrom there aren’t many clear upgrades in free agency that are better than Charlie on a 1 year deal in free agency.

Now we can let everyone else battle for the 5 spot, and we have some depth for injuries and trades.

I think it's clear AA does not want to extend pitchers in their late 20s which is actually pretty smart. Wouldn't hold my breath man
