The Braves are not considering trading right fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. — or, for that matter, any other young player they have signed to an extension.

While the club, as a matter of policy, does not award no-trade clauses, a player who signs an extension does it with the implicit understanding he will not be traded. Obviously, things can change — a player, for example, eventually might want out. But if the Braves break the trust they’ve created internally, players will become more resistant to the extensions that have positioned the team for long-term success.

Two other things that are highly unlikely for the Braves: The signing of deGrom or a shortstop other than Dansby Swanson. If the Braves cannot keep Swanson, they probably will be out of the picture for Trea Turner, Carlos Correa and Xander Bogaerts, all of whom figure to be more expensive. Which is why president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos at the GM meetings mentioned Orlando Arcia and Vaughn Grissom as internal options.

No player currently with the Braves will earn more than $22 million over the course of his contract, seemingly creating the flexibility for a major expenditure. But the Braves are reluctant to enter into a deal with any player who takes up too high a percentage of their payroll, knowing in future seasons the salaries of their young players will rise.
That's interesting commentary on the contract extensions essentially coming with a built in no trade clause. Hasn't considered it. I also don't necessarily believe it.

Highly debatable. If anything, they are about the same currently but Grissom's upside is much higher. Grissom had the same amount of fWAR in almost 100 fewer plate appearances... but when you account for expected stats, they were about the same.

I'm sure the unspoken part includes "We won't trade you unless you are a complete ass that leaves us no choice." Which probably doesn't apply to Ronald or anyone else who has signed an extension...yet.

If we cant sign none of the top shortstops or trade for a good one. Arcia is not the answer and Grissom still need time to develop.

The Braves 1-9 does not have to be exclusive of anyone not a potential all-star. My understanding is they like Arcia's defense. Defense plays at SS. Last year the braves needed significant production from SS at the dish because LF, DH and 2B were largely black holes. Ozzie is back at 2B. Problem should be solved there. So if you fill SS with defense first, you need to get more production from LF or DH. Those are like the easiest places to find a reasonably priced bat first guy... yet somehow AA has failed the last two years (Ozuna, Rosario and others.). I doubt he goes 0-3.

Grissom can’t play SS. Grissom has more upside with the bat, but he’s not a viable solution at SS.

There is no debate. Defensively, Grissom is currently not an MLB caliber SS. And offensively, while he may have a higher upside, I honestly don't see him being much better (if at all) then Arcia in 2023.

I think people could be sleeping on Arcia. He posted some pretty positive numbers, including the highest BB rate and EV of his career. Granted it was only 234 PA's, but that isn't an insignificant amount.

AA said that Grissom was going to have 3 work out sessions with Washington this off-season on SS defense. I just don’t see how he and Arcia can be our plan after winning a World Series and drawing over 3 million fans last season

They’re saying that so they have some leverage in negotiations with FA. They probably wanna start Grissom in AAA next season.

Heywood finally released by the Cubs. Now we can bring him back to help our AAA team!

Even if we have a starter its good to have a decent backup option. Also greatly increases his trade value.

If some way we can move Ozuna. This are my three targets Rizzo, Haniger and Andrus.

You move Olson to DH and Haniger cover right field if Acuña go down. Those 3 players probably we can sign them to a 1 year deal.

We reached the "rationalizing Orlando Arcia as the starting shortstop" phase of the offseason a lot earlier than I expected.

I found a dime on the sidewalk this morning. I'll bet that dime that Arcia is not our starting SS in 2023.

Like Michael Jackson, Winker wears a glove for no apparent reason, but the guy can flat out rake. Off year in 2022. We still have Rosario to deal with so Winker probably won't be in the 404 area code unless he's on the visiting team.

Why would we move Olson to DH? He's the best defensive 1b in baseball.
