Three ****ing years? What are we doing?
That salary is as bloated as Jimenez’ ass.

What is the board opinion on Harrison Bader? I'm not necessarily advocating for him, but he's an above average OF who can play CF. RHH who doesn't hit RHP very well, but career OPS against LHP is .824. Didn't have a good 2023 and he's 30, so it may be expected decline. I know MFII is on board given Bader's Gator past.

There's a trend of AA fixating on random players and valuing them more than you'd expect.
Giving up a draft pick to sign Will Smith to 3 yr deal.
Giving Drew Smyly $11 million out of nowhere.
Trading Malloy for Jimenez and then doubling down on 3 yr deal.
Well:
So those are the marks for similar relievers recently, and Jimenez’s deal at least lies at the low end of that spectrum. The contract is generally in line with those for other non-closer relievers in recent years. Rafael Montero got three years and $34.5MM from the Astros, Taylor Rogers three years and $33MM from the Giants, while Kendall Graveman got three years and $24MM from the White Sox.

AA knows how much he has to spend and if he couldn’t afford it then he wouldn’t have done it. JJ got better as the year went on but I do wish it was 2 years instead of 3.

AA is mostly just spending more money to bring back a BP that was pretty good in 2023. While I admit to holding out hope for more impact arms, it’s hard to be anything but content with these contracts.
The good news is these aren’t the types of moves made by a team with limited resources. These are moves made by a team with plenty of cash to spend.

I like the Johnson contract a lot, this one not so much. I think Johnson could be a big time weapon based on how he pitched with Atlanta last year. Jimenez was too shaky for me and I don’t see the stuff. I could be wrong.

I think this is the best way to look at it. If he was low on funds he wouldn’t have made this signing. I think AA will move quick on a SP so he can sit back and see if another good deal falls in his lap later on in the offseason but won’t be desperate to make it happen.

I am expecting Nicky Lopez to be next…
thethe (11-03-2023)
Lopez also made 3.7 million in 2023 and was likely going to be DFAed by the Royals this offseason so they didn't have to pay him in arbitration. Lopez can pick it but is an awful hitter and is essentially a backup level player.
Will the Braves bring Lopez back? Hard to say. But he would likely earn twice as much in arbitration that Arcia is being paid. Don't see the Braves doing that.
