I would take 40 million over 3 years over a longer lower AVV contract. He can still hit one more payday even if smaller than this. even if he starts to fade or gets hurt, someone would still take a chance on him at 37 knowing that even 50% wheeler is better than most teams #4 starter.

The Athletic wrote an article this morning about extension candidates and estimated it taking 7 years, $195 million for Fried right now.

I dont think theres any amount Max would sign for now. The way he probably sees it if we are willing to offer it now we will be willing to offer it a year from now. He also knows wer wont be the high bidder so anything we offer is just going to be the starting point for other teams. I wont begrudge Max for doing it as long as he doesnt pretend like he isnt out to get the top dollar and wants to stay here. Nothing wrong with going with the top bidder, just dont lie about it.

Fried would do well to take a look at Snell and Monty still sitting at home in March before he overplays his hand. As talented as he is, and as much as we all love him, the reality of the situation is he's going to be a 31 year old FA SP with a very spotty injury history who has so far produced 1 season of 4+ wins.

Already 2-0 Braves. I am just salivating at the thought of having Acuna/Harris 1-2 in the lineup hitting in front of Riley/Olson.

AJ Smith-Shawver has four strikeouts through 2.1 innings, all on the changeup. He threw it less than 10% of the time last year. O'Day is raving about him in the radio booth - says his three strikeouts in his first spring start were also on the changeup.

Yeah, but sometimes you gotta bet on the come. Wheeler had zero 4 win seasons when he signed with Philly, he's had 19.6 WAR in his four Philly seasons, one of which was only 60 games. He certainly looked like a 5-6 WAR pitcher, but seemingly always nicked up. There are guys who get more durable as their careers progress, and frankly Max doesn't have a lot of miles for a guy his age. Max has 700 innings, Felix Hernandez had 2200 at this age.

AJSS is basically Strider when he doesn't have his best stuff and sits 94-95 instead of 98-99. Adding a reliable CH would be excellent.

He's stuck out 7 in ST on his change up per radio

Another strikeout for the second out of the inning, this one on a fastball. He's pulled at pitch count.

    AJSS: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K.

His change-up wasn't very good last year. He must have improved it.

It’s funny to me that the Changeup is being taught at the earliest levels of baseball, and yet many show up with out a working version of it

A lot of young guys come into the league and can't throw strikes even though they've been working on it for most of their life.

All of this takes enormous time/experience to get it all down.

    He wants that fifth-starter spot.

I’m well aware of all that. It just strikes me as a really effective pitch that can be picked up quickly at early levels where the slider/curve are not.

Then guys come up without a version in their arsenal.

    Just a bit odd
