    possible Heyward long term deal....

Schuerholz, Wren talk Heyward and extensions
    By Jane Hammond

    Scott Cunningham
MLB.com's Tracy Ringolsby says the Braves anticipate giving a big extension to Heyward after next year.

Tracy Ringolsby of MLB.com has an interesting article discussing the road to the Braves giving out so many long-term extensions to their core players of Freddie Freeman, Craig Kimbrel, Julio Teheran and now Andrelton Simmons. The key, as we all have heard, is the new Cobb County stadium which will bring in a larger revenue stream to the club.

"This was really born out of the idea that we feel we have a dynamic young core of players and over the next few years we definitely want to keep them together," said Braves executive vice president and GM Frank Wren, who along with manager Fredi Gonzalez got a contract extension of his own on Wednesday. "We do not envision going into a new ballpark without our core in place."
The whole piece is worth a read, and Schuerholz had similar thoughts, but the key here is this line from Ringolsby:

The expectation is that after next season, the Heyward deal can be expanded so that he, too, will be locked up at least through the first year in the new ballpark.
It seems so casually thrown in, as if of course we should assume Jason Heyward will be around forever. Interesting insight from someone who talked to both Schuerholz and Wren about the Braves' future.

If signing Jason means Justin can't be retained, maybe it means BJ will leave as well.

So if it came down to Justin or Jason, you'd rather have Justin?

I'd rather have Jason if it mean't this team was devoid of any Upton's.

If I had to choose only one between Justin and Jason to keep...

I'd probably have to pick Jason. Younger, elite defender and base runner.

I'm confident they will sign Heyward to a long term deal after this season.

It'll be interesting to see what happens if Jason has another injury this year that keeps him out for awhile.

Very possible if Heyward explodes this year.

I suggest everyone takes time to read Ringoldsby's article CLOSELY> I didnt derive the same outcome as the blog writers.

Like getting hit in the face with a baseball and the other injury which was non-baseball related?

    Last year were fluky injuries.

Chances are better with Freeman and others signed but i'll believe it if pin hits paper.

What about the season before last or was it 2011 where he missed more games?

    2012 he played 150+

So he's had 1 year missing games from injury on him and that makes him injury prone now?

He had the thumb injury in 2010. In 2011 he had the shoulder injury. Let's not forget that in the minor's Heyward also had nagging injury issues. This is nothing new.

Of course but cant blame last year on injuries given both were flukish, mainly getting hit in the face with a baseball.

Yes they were fluky and that can't be pinned on Heyward.

I just went back and read this article for the 3rd time. Note if you will the last paragraph that is included in Goldflys post. There are no quotation marks on the pertinent info. Ringolsby would not have written this as such IMO.

last year actually showed Heyward is less injury prone IMO. He didn't have baseball injuries and most years he has. If he stays on the field this year his marketability goes up some more. I think the lack of a long term deal is Heyward's camp betting on this. If his value goes up we'll have to pay big money to keep him. And the Freeman deal shows we'll try.

After what I've seen in the passed two weeks, I will have 100% confidence that if Jason hits FA it will be because he intends to do so no matter what and wants to see what he is worth. I think they are ready willing and able but Hey thinks gauging a long term deal off of his last year would be selling him short (that's his prerogative ).

Somebody posted it in the Simmons thread. The org would want him to be DL-free for a season, and both sides (not to mention fans!) want to really see him break out. That seems like the most plausible explanation.

Yep, a better question is why would he sign a year before FA if he has a healthy/great year.

He could cash in big that winter.

I hope he signs with the Braves long-term but i'll believe it if pin hits paper.

It's risky on his part though if he gets hurt or has a down year, etc but i can see his reasoning.
