I dunno why, but I'm paranoid that payroll is being cut. Sure, AA recently said that payroll was going up. But he also recently said that all of the coaching staff would be back, and then 3 were gone. I don't think anyone here ever gave it a though that d'Arnaud's option might not be picked up. But here we are.

Nothing much different than the numbers we've been throwing out for all these guys.

Fried for 5 year 125-140 million seems very reasonable. Yusei Kikuchi 3 years 54 million seems right up our alley. Shane Bieber 2 years 40 million seems like a good bet. He should be back early enough to 80-100 IP this year. Then you hope for a fully healthy year in 2026. Nick Martinez looks like an intriguing Pitcher who could be what we thought Reynaldo would be last year. Good enough to start but also a great reliever if we need it. 2 years 32 million for him doesnt sound too bad.

We were spending to much money at C with the production we were getting. I like TDA but I think it was the right choice. We got Murphy to be the guy not a platoon guy.

The problem for us will probably be the years not the yearly amount. I hope the thinking is who cares about 10 years from now when we can add a 26 year old future Hall of Famer in his prime years to go with what we already got. Look at the offense the yankees had. We can afford an Arcia if we had a Soto in LF. We are as primed for world series contention as any team can really be. They need to just consider the last 1/3rd of the contract a legacy cost.

Adding Soto would be insane. If you somehow traded for Crochet and added Soto man there would be no stopping us. Soto is about as money as it gets at the plate and we have a pretty big Latino bunch that likes to have fun so he would fit right in.

AA said the payroll had never gone down under him. Which was a hint not a direct answer. I dont think cutting payroll would be a big deal. It only makes sense to do it to get under the luxury cap. And if they care about resetting the luxury tax penalty then that tells us they plan to spend over it in the future. I dont know that we will have the opportunity to do it after this year for quite some time.

A little surprised we declined TDA's option, but with Baldwin waiting in the wings. And Snit doing the stupid platoon and never playing Murphy on a consistent basis, it had to be done. Not sure what AA's gonna do with the extra money. But we only have like 3-4 real holes to fill: SP, LF, SS, and bullpen depth.

That's a good point. And we know regardless, the team is going to be very competitive next year even if payroll doesn't go up again.

I think if they go with Soto its also a bet on our young pitching. Baldwin certainly isnt going anywhere with TDA gone. So any trade for Crochet likely involves our top pitching prospects. We already have the best rotation in baseball on paper. We have a lot of good prospects in the upper minors. This is why we draft pitching to heavy. Look at Schwellenbach who we all probably would have been more than okay trading this time last year.

I think AJSS, Waldrep, and Nacho in a package together would be strong. Baldwin and Caminiti are off limits. With so many young guys on the team I would be fine sending that package for Crochet.

Snit has been doing a catcher platoon since the beginning of time:

    Flowers/Suzuki
    Flowers/McCann
    d'Arnaud/Contreras
    d/Arnaud/Murphy

Not to my this extreme. And there wasn’t as big of a gulf in talent with those others.

Surprised not surprised. A lot of money invested in the position and it's ride-or-die with Murphy. Curious to see how the back him up. I don't think they would have Baldwin as the primary back-up given he needs ABs. That would Tromp or a different low-cost veteran. Maybe Max Stassi seeing they were already paying him in 2024.

Soto is going to be a stud at the plate for another decade. $45m? I doubt that gets it done but if it does, do it.

I don’t think Soto is getting Ohtani money even though that’s what Boras is gonna push. Boras has fell off his game some the last few years waiting to long to get his guy a deal. Ohtani can still pitch in some capacity and has a huge Japanese following and that’s where him and Soto will be separated. Soto isn’t as valuable. I can see 500 million but not more.

Soto just turned 26, waits for age jokes. So i could see the team that gets him, give him a 13-14 year deal that pushes up to 600M to lower the AAV. A 13-14 year deal would put it at around 42-46 a year.

Spotrac has us at 176 on the tax, but thats with TDA on it, and Laureano and Canning as well. Thats close to 20M right there, so suffice to say. We still have quite a bit of room to add and not a ton of holes really. So there's room for a big splash if AA wants to do it.

I don’t wanna sign anybody till they’re 39-40 but somebody will. I figure the teams that will be after him would be Yankees, Mets, Braves, Dodgers, and maybe the Giants.

Wow, that kinda sucks. Since we’re losing Iglesias after this year we may be looking at another late inning reliever this off-season
