Ideally we'd acquire a SS to push Arcia to the bench and possibly look to resign Merrifield as a super sub. Bullpen and Rotation look strong but each could use another quality arm for depth.

Based on my estimated calculations we would be around 210 million in payroll for the luxury cap. I believe the cap raises to 242 million next year. Keep in mind luxury tax averages all years together so it's different than the actual payroll.


I think the roster is solid with one gaping hole at SS. I am not a big fan of Willy Adames but he is the clear cut best option for improving the team. Nacho is an emergency SS only. Maybe there will be a better SS available via trade but I don't want to lose the assets it would take on a trade. I think d'Arnaud is a good candidate to be traded or not have his option picked up. We will probably be very close to the cap. I won't be surprised if they go after Crochet in the off-season.

They’ll definitely go after a good SP after losing Fried.

RosterResource has the Braves current 2025 luxury number at $194.4M.

The Braves could add additional payroll by picking up options:

Ozuna $15M
Jackson $5M
TDA $8M
Bummer $6M

I have to imagine all but Jackson will be kept, adding $29M. That puts the luxury number at $223.4M.

The arb players with my horrible projections:

Laureano $1M
Ynoa $1M
Kelenic $3M

They probably only keep Kelenic, but let's round up a bit and say the luxury number is now $227M.

The 3rd luxury tax level goes up to $281M next year, so let's assume the Braves want to stay $6M under it for opening day. This sets the max payroll at about $275M, which gives AA something like $48M to spend in 2025.

The absolute needs are 1 impact SP and 1 average SP.

The other big need is SS, thought Arcia can technically fill that role.

So there's the 2025 primer...$48M to acquire 2 SPs and hopefully a SS.

Kim from SD is by far the best SS option for us. Will come much cheaper than Adames and is an amazing defender.

Someone like Kim might not want to leave the West Cost unless its a big overpay. The Dodgers will probably sign him for 15 million to be a backup.


One guy who I wonder about is Blake Snell. Not exactly the kind of year thats going to get him a long term contract but damn if he aint having a big second half yet again. If its a similar 1 year type of deal sign me up. The second half is where the playoffs are. I dont think SP is an absolute must have though. Its a must have like every team needs 8 aces because you have to play for injuries. Schwellenbach establishing himself has changed the dynamic. We kind of hit the jackpot with Sale/Lopez/SS. All our best prospect capital is invested in pitching. If they want to bring in some scrap heap veteran for cheap to compete for the 5th spot thats fine but we have several options already. Resources need to be spent on the offense. If the 2025 offense can just bridge half the gap between the 2023 and 2024 offense we will win a ton of games even with Elder as the 5th starter. The only real option to do that is SS.

Its possible Bo Bichette could be available in the offseason. Blue Jays are terrible and need to rebuild. He drastically underperformed this year and got hurt recently so they probably wanted to wait until the offseason. He has a good track record of success and would only be 27. Considering its trading one season I think we could have the assets to pull off the trade fairly easily. Just a matter of who we are willing to trade. Despite feelings here I think Waldrep has a lot of value and would work as a centerpiece in a potential trade.

Strider will be coming back from surgery and Sale will be a year older so the rotation will no doubt need a TOR starter acquired and then a MOR type of guy. We got lucky with SS pitching like he has so that eliminates one spot we need in the offseason. Theres a good crop of pitchers available in the offseason and i expect AA to get the best one he can early and then wait to fill the other spot when somebody (and there will be) overplays their hand and needs a pillow deal. Bichette is interesting for SS bc he’ll be a FA after next year.

I would be surprised if Strider is even available until June or so of next year.

hoping there is enough season left to know what Anderson/Ynoa/Waldrep/AJSS types will bring for next year. I would think if one of those looks good then that fills your MOR type guy. I think Sale will be good next year too. He just reminds of these special older pitchers (Mort, Max, verlander) that if healthy will be good even in their upper 30's.

good question... I just always assume arm issues take about a year and a half to come back from.. So I would personally plan to not count on him until midway point and then let him surprise me if sooner...

I am no expert, but my recollection is that the brace was supposed to have a MUCH shorter recovery time.

I doubt that they'll bring in an ace type unless it's a distressed asset like Sale.

Fried will be gone, Strider will probably be on a innings limit, Sale will be a year old and still super fragile so yeah we will need another TOR starter. I dont see AA going the route of havijg to limit all the starters innings again like hes had to this year.

I would assume that if they can stay healthy the rest of the way Sale and Lopez could come off their innings restrictions next year. I think we need more of a highly competent MOR starter
