I’d be surprised if Cole left the Yankees. But Cole instantly becomes the top pitcher in the free agent market. I know he grew up a Yankees fan, but a SoCal guy who went to UCLA, could make him appealing for the Dodgers, unfortunately.

The Cole opt out could hurt Fried bc that knocks him down to the 3rd best SP available now. The Yanks could make a play for Fried now. I don’t see Cole getting more than he opted out of.

Joc Pederson has declined his mutual option with Arizona.

He might get it. Almost every team needs a strong-side platoon OF.
Joc had a pretty terrific 3 year run on offense. I think 2/25 with a 3rd year option is the baseline of what he's looking for.
Also, I am not so sure why Cole would immediately be the top arm on the market. He had a considerable "down season" at age 33 and missed half the season due to injury. Would teams really prefer him over Fried and Burnes? I sure wouldn't if the money was equal.

Anyone who takes Fried over COle is a moron. Fried isn't that much younger (about 3 and a half years younger) Cole has 5 season of 5+ fWAR to Fried's 0. Cole has a 2.77 ERA in the post season for Fried's 5.10. Cole has thrown 200 innings 6 times. Fried 0.
You could argue Cole isn't worth a 5/180 contract (basically what the yankees would be giving him) but to say he's not worth more than Fried is ****ing hysterical.
Burnes will likely be the number 1 starter because he's won a Cy YOung and his highs are so high, that you can see it go interesting. But I think most teams still take Cole because he's the most recent Cy Yougn winner. He was down last year but he also was hurt, you can gamble on him coming back healthy. Hell look at his numbers in August and September. He had a 2.25 ERA and 2.62 FIP. Even in the post season, he had a 3.13 FIP. I won't count ERA because he had an ungodly amount of unearned runs.

3.5 years younger is pretty significant. And while Cole has had a better career, what's more important is likely future performance, which is where age is important.
Also, over the last 4 years, Fried's 16.3 bWAR is only slightly behind Coles 17.7 (and Cole has 83 more IPs). The quality of Frieds innings have actually been slightly better over this time frame.

Since this is a hot stove thread let me throw a hypothetical trade out there. A 3 way trade between the Braves White Sox and Red Sox. The Red Sox get Crochet - Andrew Benintindi - and Ramon Laureano. Braves get Wilyer Abreu - David Hamilton and Luis Robert. The White Sox get prospects from us. Who knows what exactly it would take but probably would have to be significant. Like AJSS and Waldrep plus more. The White Sox cut all their remaining payroll and get back some good prospects. Red Sox get Crochet while only having to give up Abreu and Hamilton since they take back the Benintendi contract. Red Sox are LH heavy but a lot of that is in their incoming prospects. Benintendi and Laureano gives them a LF platoon until those prospects come up. Benintendi actually had a pretty good second half at the plate and the Red Sox are very familiar with him. Braves get OF depth to dream of adding Robert and Abreu. Both are position versatile enough that we can swap them out easily as needed. Hamilton pushes Arcia at SS and atleast gives us a good lefty platoon option at the position. Arcia might hit better playing less too. The price for Braves would be steep but Abreu and Hamilton are pre-arb players super cheap with years of service time left and Roberts is relatively cheap for 3 more years. So these are all long term pieces we are adding. Allows us to spend more on proven players for the rotation. We could theoretically probably afford to re-sign Fried if we fixed the offense this cheaply.
No one is above the law

I’m not giving up our best prospects so that the White Sox can get rid of Benintendi to the Red Sox. If Crochet is in any deal and we are giving up Waldep and AJSS then he needs to be coming here. I’ll take Crochet and Robert all day. If you get Robert out of CF and put him in Lf it will keep him more healthy.
