MLB's New Fielder Tracking System and Jason Heyward

MLB announced today that it would install an elaborate system of cameras for the purpose of tracking a series of incredibly detailed numbers regarding the performance of fielders. It's modeled on a similar NBA system and should really help refine defensive statistics.

At the link above, you can see the video MLB used to demonstrate the system. It's Heyward's game-ending and game-saving catch against the Mets last season. The stats show that Heyward's route to the ball was 97 percent efficient and generally just bad-ass.

Hopefully we can start to have even more reliable fielding metrics. Still hard to compensate for enviornmental factors though which come into play on the defensive side of the ball

It took me nearly a minute to actually find the link in your post, but it was worth it in the end.

You need to improve your jumps and routes. I guess that's what spring training is for.

That ball was almost exactly between Heyward (80.9 feet) and Johnson (82.7). Johnson did not come close to making the play. If you freeze it at 28 seconds you see how much better a jump Heyward got. Makes me appreciate the greatness of that play even more.

Actually Reed's reaction time was only a few hundreths behind Jason, Jason's top speed was what allowed him to make the play.

For anyone confused by the headline, Major League Baseball is not placing a GPS unit on Prince Fielder.

They can do this but they can't get balls and strikes right?

I wish we had this for the holbrook outfield fly. Then we could actually see how far off the ground the ball when he called it. My guess is 10 feet.

If Tony LaRussa was still managing, it would be 9 gb. 2 gb just for the pitching changes alone.

A gigabyte is less than a terabyte.

It was also mentioned that this will be used for base running as well so we'll get to see how awesome Heyward is going from first to home.

Is there currently media that can hold that much information in one place? That's a ton of information.

Can't believe our supposed site programmer didn't even know this relatively simple fact. Add that on top of the lack of maintenance and improvement to the site since its inception, and I think it could be a sign that we need a change in management.

    Site programmer? lol

I literally did trial and error with each setting and wanted to see if it worked... look at our profile pages and everything else out of color. Once I got the main forum stuff to the right style, I gave up. And yes I'm aware the links don't differentiate from the other text.
