1.) We were completely out of the starting Pitcher market until Medlen's injury - liked our rotation, liked our depth. Hadn't even considered a move - Kris' injury was the catalyst...Beachy's issues had nothing to do with the signing.
2.) Perfect example of the flexibility that Liberty provides the management team - he and JS talked following Medlen's exit and agreed that a move needed to be made. The decision to pursue Santana was made Monday afternoon. The decision was made locally without concern for permission. Made one phone call to McGuirk. He called back with approval to proceed within an hour. They could've made the offer Monday night.
3.) Having the McCann compensatory pick helped soften the blow, but they'd have made the offer regardless of having the pick - really feel this team has a legitimate shot to contend. "We needed a Pitcher of Ervin's quality, and we've committed a lot of money. We feel he gives us the chance to win now."
4.) Santana threw a 38 pitch bullpen a few hours ago - reports that he threw a 2 inning simulated game over the weekend are wrong. Santana's count is that he's thrown a total of 17 bullpens so far. Won't take long to be "ready" - maybe not the first week, but not long after.
5.) A "little concerned" that Beachy's not progressing as hoped.
