MINORS FINAL 5/7: Revealing Bromberg; Many moves! All-aces day

Like most of you, I had to climb onto MiLB to find out something about David Bromberg after his overpowering start last night (Five innings, one hit, eight Ks). He's a veteran (27), to be sure, and a big dude (6-6, 245) and a FA pickup over the winter, a guy who should be able to enjoy success in Double-A.

Twins fans probably know the name all too well. He was on track to be a stud in their system; he was 9-0 in the Appy league in 2007, and was named the league's No. 3 prospect for that year. He backed it with a 13-4, 2.70 in the tough FSL in 2009 and was named the Twins Minor League Pitcher of the Year and the league's top pitching prospect. He was ranked the Twins' No. 9 prospect by BBA.

Here's some stuff from the 2011 Prospects Handbook (thanks to BBA for this wonderful publication; they have largely filled the void left by the collapse of TSN). Bromberg "fell" to 13th on the prospect list:

The Twins drafted Bromberg in the 32nd round out of high school in 2005 as a draft-and-follow, even though at the time he was pushing 275. Since then, he signed for $40,000 and went on to win three leagues' strikeout crowns and earn a spot on the Twins' 40-man roster. Pitching on awful teams in 2010, he still logged 150 innings for the third straight year. His fastball topped out at 94-95 and his curve was rated the best in the organization.

    So what happened?

Not what you think. After losing 35 pounds and earning raves from the organization that spring, on April 28, 2011, Adeiny Hechavarria lined a ball off his right forearm, breaking it. His comeback was delayed with a bout of shoulder tendinitis, and was held to 42 ugly innings in 2011 and under 100 in 2012. The Twins dropped him off the 40-man roster and became a minor league FA. He pitched for the Pirates system in 2013, going 7-13, 3.50 in AA and AAA, but got his innings back up to 147.

A free agent again, he signed with the Braves in January. He is currently owner of a 2.01 ERA and a 1-2 record thanks to six unearned runs, five in one game April 19.

So he's not the folk singer David Bromberg? While this is interesting and inspiring, I think a 68-year-old folk singer on the mound would make a helluva story!

Seriously, I know from the Twins' media that they liked this kid. Didn't realize he'd had a serious injury.

Yean Carlos Gil is someone to start paying attention to. A bit old for low A at age 23. But he missed most of the 2012 season. Before that he put up very good numbers. Last year his numbers were mediocre, but he might have needed the year to rebuild his arm strength.

Was a shade old (but barely a shade) when he pitched his first season in the DSL at age 19 and was progressing until his arm injury in 2012. I think they were bringing him back slowly, which explained why he went to the Appy League last year. He was on a fast track before he was injured. He has had very solid control numbers. I'd be curious to know his pitch repertoire.

Remember Brandon Drury? The teenage third baseman the Braves included in the Arizona deal for no apparent reason? At the ripe old age of 21, he is coming of age -- he is second in the Cal League in homers (8 in 32 games) and third in RBIs (29).

Oh, I think Arizona wanted him. I always liked him and our paucity of 3B prospects is troubling, but I don't think he was absentmindedly included in the deal. I'll be curious to see how Drury develops. He's a free swinger.

Only 26 strikeouts in 32 games. Another reason I thought he might be breaking through. Also hitting .288 after .302 season in Midwest League.

Got a tweet from the Southern Illinois Miners that the Braves have signed second baseman David Nick from their club. He hit 11 homers for D-Backs' Advanced A/AA clubs last season. Big for a 2B at 6-2; was originally a 4th-round pick by AZ in '09. Still only 24. Hit .300 in Cal League in 2011.

He's not a big strikeout guy and I see his walk numbers are up, but he didn't take many walks in rookie league or in Rome. Curious to see how he develops. He was a very young draftee (I think he was 17 his entire first season).

Victor Reyes 4 for 4, BA now at .380.

Strong start from Gil. He's making a case for a mid-season promotion.
