MINORS FINAL 5/31: Another Braves pitching prospect injured(?)

Another injured pitcher Friday night. Mississippi starter Williams Perez came out after five pitches, facing only two hitters. No report was immediately available on the injury.

The insult that followed was that mustachioed reliever Eric Berger gave up eight earned runs in 1.1 innings.

First game of DSL gives us a chance to learn some new names.

One jumps out the first day for several reasons. He hit third in the lineup, which is a hint as to what the organization thinks of his bat. He played shortstop, which is a hint as to what the organization thinks of his glove. He hit a home run in his first game, which is always nice to do.

His name is Alejandro Salazar. Born October 5, 1996. From Venezuela. Listed at 6'0", 170 lbs. Signed for 100K.

What's more impressive is the list of guys that are starting their careers stateside. Two guys in particular Ozhaino Albies and Kevin Josephina.

Yeah, they are being aggressive with a few guys. That's one of the biggest changes I've noticed since DeMacio took over. Guys are pushed more. I frankly don't know if it's a good idea or not, but I trust them to make those decisions. One of the things that may make it more seamless for the Curacao kids is that English, while not the official language of the island, is spoken with some regularity on the island, which somewhat removes the language barrier. I'm sure baseball ability has more to do with where a kid is assigned, but having some English language skills has to e a plus for a foreign prospect.

Outfielder Jose Pina is another first-year international signee being pushed to the GCL.

The four guys who received the biggest bonuses this past signing season were left-hander Luis Barrios of Colombia (who was the starting pitcher for the DSL team in their opening game), right-hander Frank Gil of Panama (who is on the DSL roster), Albies and Josephina. Josephina has an older brother and Barrios a twin brother who are also on the DSL roster.
