    Ranking baseballs managers.

Lets see where old Fredi ranks among all other current managers.

    Here is one.

When you have an average manager, you will never be more than, well average.

Where do you guys rank him?

For me I believe he is 16-17 just because he has a good team around him more than anything. There was a reason the Marlins fired him.

Things like batting Bj 2nd and playing Uggla at all are examples of his weaknesses. His bullpen management is suspect at best. Other than that he is a good manager.

Maybe the dumbest thing I've ever read.

Not that I don't agree that Fredi is anything more than average, or slightly above average.....but, the old saying "There was a reason so and so fired him" holds no weight in the world of college/professional managing. Most of the greatest coaches and managers have been fired at least once in their careers and most of them several times. Just because you are fired by a team does not mean you can't be or are not a good coach/manager. Most of the time good managers are fired because it is cheaper and easier to get rid of a manager, than 9 worthless baseball players with 10 million dollar contracts who play below their abilities.

It's next to impossible to accurately rank managers. The reason he was fired from the Marlins is because he was a good manager.

Managers have to give their bench players playing time even when they are lesser options than the starters. It's Managerial Understanding 101. Uggla was likely in the lineup today not because Fredi wanted him to be, but because as Joe said in the pre-game, Miley is the best type of pitcher to use Uggla against, a middling lefty who doesn't throw very hard.

I also think it was a good time to rest TLS because he's had such a great start to his major league career. It's nice to let him get a breather while he's still hot and can soak up all those positive vibes.

Except for his brutal bullpen management, Fredi is a good manager. But bullpen management is one of the more important parts of the job. So it is hard for me not to rate him as below average.

I agree with you about his bullpen management but I'd also argue (along with former Brave Huddy apparently) that Fredi panics too often when things get tough. That also leads to his mistakes sometimes IMO.

Put your opinion of where he should be ranked then. Do you have him as a top 10 manager?

A lot of times this year the team has played like they had their heads up their asses. We looked sloppy in the field and pitchers seem unprepared to bunt. The manager has to be responsible for some of that.

I'd like to know how much of bullpen management falls on Roger. It should be a lot, imo. We've had some of the best relievers in the game the last few years with Venters, EOF or Kimbrel having career type seasons. This year the bullpen looks human again.

I think the most important work a manager does is keeping the players on an even keel and Fredi and the organization seems to do a good job of that most of the time. Other than CJ, we haven't had any silly drama yet but we're still the 2nd youngest team in the majors.

I don't know where he ranks but to me it still feels like we're overachieving the same as we have been for most of Fredi's tenure.

I'm talking about the sentiment in bold, not that Fredi is a bad manager. Although, I disagree with that too.

Speaking of bullpen management, Kimbrel should never have been pulled from the Brooks Conrad game.

You're right. But, I understand why Bobby did it. Besides, Huff got lucky.

Ok, that is your opinion. Where do you rank him? After games like today, I think he is even further down the list than 17th.

No, what I bolded in the original post was not an opinion. It was a statement that is in no way grounded in fact or any kind of sound logic whatsoever.

Nor can you prove it is not fact. Fredi is at best an average manager. Games like last night proves he is not a top 15 manager.

He's disputing your statement that, by having an average manager, a team can only ever be average. It's really not true. Teams win championships with average-to-below average managers all the time.

He left a guy with double digit home runs and a track record of big pinch hits on the bench yesterday. I don't need to say anything else.

Actually, I can. If Fredi is an average manager, and teams with average managers can only be average, then how did the Braves win 96 games last year?

That was the easy one. But, I'm not going through history and pointing out all of the instances that dispute your claim.

    89, 94, 96.

Looks about average to me. Would have been more than 89 had it not been for the epic collapse which falls more on the players than Fredi.

Just remember, the players won 96 games last year in spite of Fredi. They all corroborated against him and decided to win 96 instead of 100 or 86. And when we got to the playoffs they decided the fun was over and they were going to choke the series away by abyssal offense, pathetic starting pitching sans Freddy, and top notch Carpentry.
    Forever Fredi
