MINORS FINAL 6/12: Draft pick reporting day

I'd give almost anything to be a fly on the wall at Disney today, which is when the majority of last week's draft picks report for their brief training camp before assignment to Danville, the GCB and in a few cases, Rome. No new news from the front; No. 1 pick is supposed to officially sign at a ceremony at home Monday, but 12 others confirmed and probably 8-10 unconfirmed signees are set to begin the next phase of their careers.

FYI, Danville begins play June 19, the GCB follow on June 20. Longtime Braves farm skippers Randy Ingle (Danville) and Rocket Wheeler (Disney) will be managing the rookie troops.

Few rotoworld blurbs on two of our top prospects:

Braves second base prospect Jose Peraza went 3-for-5 with a stolen base for High-A Lynchburg on Wednesday, raising his season line to .333/.359/.448.
Peraza extended his lead on the Carolina League leaderboard with hits 88, 89, and 90. He is hitting .404/.429/.681 during his 11-game hitting streak. Peraza has 31 games with at least two hits and 12 games where he went hitless.

Braves catching prospect Christian Bethancourt went 3-for-5 for Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday, raising his season line to .271/.300/.372.
Bethancourt is in the midst of a 10 game hitting streak during which he is hitting .395/.400/.474 with three doubles. He is a strong defensive catcher and is already on the 40-man roster, so he could replace Gerald Laird as the Braves backup catcher.

A few probably here wrote Wren off a little prematurely.

I love that he seems to have knack to get on base so hopefully that will continue as he progresses through the system.

I don't think anyone has written him off. I just think his ceiling is 5th OF.

If Wren finds a way to consistently post OBP > 360 then who knows. The reports say he is an excellent defensive outfielder right?

    Good range, weak arm.

Wren and Peraza have to be an absolute nightmare on the basepaths for any pitcher playing against Lynchburg.

And he would have to do that to contribute at the big league level. The thing that saves him is that his K-rate is manageable, but he has zip in the power department. By comparison, Jordan Schafer had an OBP of .378 and OPS of .850 in AA at age 21. Wren is 23 at High A with a lower OBP and a much lower OPS. Granted, Schafer's suspension and subsequent injuries put a crimp in his ceiling, but the question for Wren is going to be whether he can maintain a .360 OBP as he moves up the line. If he doesn't, he's just another guy like Jose Constanza.

I agree that Peraza and Wren are headaches for Lynchburg's opponents, but that's a long way from the bigs. Don't get me wrong. I hope these guys do well. Peraza looks like the real deal and Wren could be a decent spare part.
