Fantastic result for Mexico. Ochoa was a wall in the net. Bad luck from Brazil too as they had a ton of hard shots that were right at the keeper.

USMNT may face Portugal sans all three Real Madridians: Ronaldo, Coentrao, and Pepe

Would be great should mean at least a draw. I'm concerned about our ability to score without Jozy.

Jozy's really not that good (except when playing inside the Netherlands).

Jozy is very important for the US's style of play. You saw it against Ghana, when Jozy was on the field the US was dominant. His holdup play is fantastic.

Yeah, he's not. Hadnt scored in 27 matches. The one thing he is good at is being a target and holding up play, but if that's your best attribute, then uh....

That's the kind of conclusion you come to when you don't actually watch the games.

From my novice eyes the US never dominated that game. They were lucky to win and pretty much all the huge soccer fans in my office said the same thing.

I do. And I've watch Jozy a ton (for USA and Sunderland)

You are just a big US Soccer homer like thethe is with all sports.

If anything I think its a shot to the equilibrium of the team - but I think it will affect the potency of the team minimally overall. Someone will fill in the role or the coach will adjust the tactics slightly or drastically to compensate. I would like to see Julian Green play the wing, and Dempsey poach and Zusi and/or Brad Evans play behind him in a 4-3-3.

Or they could just park the bus against a vulnerable Portugal and tie. Play bench players again Germany for the inevitable loss. And walk into the Quarterfinals at #2 of Group G and likely play Belgium.

I'm not talking about Sunderland. Some players are better fit for country than club. I think long term Jozy will be fine in Sunderland but this year he was learning. Jozy is far and away the best player at the striker position for the US.

I'd like to see Croatia beat Cameroon and Mexico and rise up to take #2 in group A over Mexico.

You really think Green can handle starting? You're way more optimistic on his current form than I.

I think they adjust. what I'd do against portugal to start at least

RB - Chandler (who's told his only job is to keep Ronaldo on his right hip (or left hip while retreating)
    CB - Cameron
    CB - Besler
    LB - Beasley
RM - Johnson (also with the task of making hell on Ronaldo in the midfield to slow him down.
    CM - Bradley
    CM - Jones
    LM - Bedoya
    ST - Dempsey
    ST - Wondo

Then you have options off the bench. If we have the lead you can then turtle up a bit. Bring on Beckerman for Bedoya and Green for Wondo have Green move in the CF role that dempsey usually plays, Dempsey play the hold up roll, Bradley play his normal roll, Jones play his normal role, and Beckerman sit deep.

If we need goals do something similar but bring on Johannson for Wondo and Zusi for Bedoya.

I like the idea of having Timmy and Fabian basically tag team Ronaldo and give him hell. He's not fit so if you pester him he may just mentally get off his game.

I'm largely indifferent. I think that will happen, but it would be nice to have a few CONCACAF teams get out despite all fo them having rough draws.

Watching the efforts of the AFC clubs. I have to wonder if FIFA shoudl consider putting CONCACAF with CONMEBOL as CONCACAF lately has been clearly better than AFC.
