MINORS FINAL 6/13: Wood throws zeros for Gwinnett

The Mississippi Braves fell 8-2 to the Tennessee Smokies on Friday night at Smokies Park, thereby eliminating the Braves from the South Division race and sending the Mobile BayBears to their fifth straight playoff appearance.

With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, a four-run, three-error frame put the Smokies (32-35) ahead for good. With reliever John Cornely on the mound, Kris Bryant and Charlie Cutler drew back-to-back walks with one away, and Dustin Geiger broke the tie with an RBI single to left. Cedric Hunter threw to the plate but the ball got away and allowed Cutler and Geiger to move into scoring position.

Cornely intentionally walked Rubi Silva to load the bases for a Jonathan Mota line drive to second that one-hopped off of Elmer Reyes’ chest and skipped away to score another, making it 4-2. Jeudy Valdez hit a two-run single to the right side past a sliding Reyes to plate two more and grow the deficit to 6-2.

The shaky sixth came after a fine start by both JR Graham and Matt Loosen. Graham held the Smokies to just two runs on five hits over five innings, striking out two and walking one in the no-decision. Loosen kept the Braves (38-29) to a similar line, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out five with two walks over five innings.

Cornely (4-2) suffered the loss in relief, allowing four runs, all earned, on two hits over 1/3 of an inning. Jeff Lorick (1-2) pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief for Tennessee and picked up the win.

Two games remain in the first half before the All-Star Break begins Monday.

rico43, was Cedric Hunter in the line-up for the M-Braves when you got to see them in Chattanooga? With all the talk thus far this season about Elmer Reyes and Kyle Kubitza, Hunter is putting up monster numbers. It's his second time through AA and maybe that's his optimal ceiling, but he is absolutely raking. 26 years old, but maybe he's a guy who finds it late. Wonder if they move him up to Gwinnett at some juncture this season. Former 3rd round pick of the San Diego Padres in 2006. Has been in a couple of other systems since.

Saw his two-homer, five RBI game against Chatt. He seems to have all the tools, but radio guy said he's been playing through a hamstring problem.

Hunter looks like he might be the real deal to me, I'd like to see him get a shot at replacing Schafer personally. If not Schafer then at least release Uggla to do so. Also, Peraza is now hitting .341 after he got three more tonight along with his 33rd stolen base. That kid is special IMO.

rico43, your text should read "former Brave minor leaguer Jeff Lorick."

DSL Braves won 7-6. Jesus Heredia gets the win and extends his scoreless innings streak to 9.1.

DH Ruben Perez goes 3/4 with a triple. Scores 1 and drives in 1. C Ruddy Todd goes 3-3 with a BB and an RBI. Braves scored 7, but had only 3 RBIs thanks to 3 Blue Jays' errors and a couple of WPs.

I feel bad for Jair. If he could have just lasted to free agency he would have got a big contract.

We should have a thread for taking bets on when Peraza gets called up.

I was just thinking that. I think he goes to AA shortly. Then gets half season at AA. Gets a good look in spring training then 2 more months at AA or AAA to start 2015 to avoid super 2 and delay free agency. La Stella splits time with Peraza and plays some lf. Then La Stella takes over lf full time in 2016 with either Justin or Heyward in RF.

Can't wait for Wood to be back in the rotation. And ya Peraza needs to be in AA.

Its kind of funny because most projected him as a reliever when he was drafted.

He didn't have that spike curve when he was drafted. Two pitches to win, Three pitches to dominate.

Also durability concerns based on his funky delivery.
